Can this be done? My friend tells memhe can use his android phone as a wifi connector for his iPad and therefore not having to pay monthly data on top of the iPad price. If able, is this only an option on phones running android?

yes, an android phone running version 2.2 (eg. the HTC Desire) can be set up to generate a wifi hotspot that any wifi enabled device can use to go on the net.====0

Very smart indeed, any applications for Apple products to do this?0

yes you can but only on jailbroaken iphones,
on android 2.2 it is built in but there are apps for all the other versions,
on symbian you can use the free or paid versions of joikuspot,
there are also apps for windows mobile phones.0 -
Such a shame you have to jailbreak your iPhone in order to increase it's functionality. I'm no expert but this is where Apple go wrong for me and the cynic in me says it's because they currently have a monopoly on the market and want to squeeze every penny from the customers.0

well it was the same with their 2nd gen Ipods and iPhones that untill they release the OS3 blue tooth didn't work, so gave you the tech but locked it off just so people had to buy (for the ipod) the update.Survey earnings total 2009 £417, 2010 £875, 2011 £5740

I know. Hopefully this attitude will come back to bite them on the !!! someday and they will start being a bit more reasonable.0

I think that will come when people stop rushing out to buy Apple products that quite frankly, are let down in so many areas but blind people in others.
I have a touch, iphone3g, macbook pro (the 3g and pro are gf's), i love Apple products for the most part but they do seem to dangle the carrot and little too far from reach with some of their tech. I couldnt believe when i first used a 1st gen iPhone that there was no MMS or Bluetooth!0 -
The wifi hotspot facility on Android 2.2 works very well. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.
In every town, in every state. In every house and every gate.
Wth every precious smile you make. And every act of kindness.

You most certainly can do this (as long as you have a good data package on your mobile). I bought a nice little proram for my Nokia 5800 called JoikuSpot for £8 (I think). I understand there is also a free version. The difference is, for me, a major one. On the paid version you get the ability to have a secrity network key just like your home router, as opposed to it being open
All you do then is turn on your wifi on the ipod/phone/pad and select this as the network. Worked a treatThere are 10 kinds of people that understand binary
Those that do
Those that dont

Sounds excellent that.
But honestly why do Apple restrict this kind of thing?
It adds such usability to the product surely it would make the iPad more attractive?0
