upgrading my handset

hello folks - i'm sure this has been covered in a previous thread but i can't find this. i'm a bit of a mobile phone contract newbie - i've had a b berry on vodafone contract for my business for about 18 months - it's a two year contract. friends have talked to me about getting the handset upgraded for free - particularly if i fone vodafone and say i am thinking of taking my business elsewhere. i guess i would like a new handset, as mine is getting a bit beaten up, and i pay between £50 and £60 per month for my contract. is this worth trying to do or am i deluding my self!?

You won't get an upgrade 6 months before the end of a contract (any contract). You can't threaten to leave as you've 6 month left (unless you pay off the remaining months up front).
You've no leverage so they've got no reason to offer you anything until you're due an upgrade, which is usually 3 months before the end of your minimum term, but you won't get a good offer until you're in the last 30 days or out of contract. . .

thanks jon - so it is likely that i would get an upgraded handset around three months before the end of the contract? i guess i will have to wait for that!

You are eligible for an upgrade 70 days before your contract end date but the remaining two plus months are added onto your new contract.

They'll make you an offer, but as a rule it won't be very good.

They only start to make good offers in the last 30 days or when you're out of your minimum term. That they way the system works.
