Do she declare rent?

Feel i have posted this in the wrong area. Feel free to move.
Have a friend who is working part time. She is not claiming benefits etc. Her son lost his job and is planning to move in with her. She will only take him in if he pays rent and his expenses. (He has been scrounging off her for a long time). Would she have to declare this rent to the tax office? She had a figure of £50 per week in mind. The last thing she wants is the hassle of paperwork etc

I would take the line that his contribution is to cover the extra expense of having him at home - food, electric, phone, internet, etc. £50 isn't enough to include rent so she isn't earning money from him so there's no income and no paperwork.
With a history of scrounging, I hope she's got a cast-iron way of getting the money from him.0 -
Thanks for the replies
She is fed up of how he in the end makes her pay for stuff. He lately managed to make her pay for his car insurance. Will she ever learn?

He can never make her pay for stuff. She chooses to do it. If she says no, there's an end of it.
How about this then..
son at his parents and on the phone ''mum i am on the phone to the insurance company and my card won't go through, can i use yours?''
mum has no choice but to say ok as long as he pays her back.

He wont get housing benefit because he is living with a family member. However as she is not claiming any type of benefit she can earn up to £4250 a year by renting out a spare room without paying any tax.
Details here:

So she can earn roughly £350 a month from her lodger without any paperwork.Free/impartial debt advice: Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) | National Debtline | Find your local CAB0
