Options
I usually buy my Glucosamine at Healthspan. I have noticed zipvit vitamins are cheaper. Anybody here using this company, are they any good? Thanks

Used this firm for a couple of years now and never had any problems
  • Do be careful NOT to buy Vitamin D from ZIPVIT.
The case against ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) as a vitamin supplement a full online paper sets out in detail why nobody should be using D2. If you want to buy Vitamin d you need to ask for CHOLECALCIFEROL or VITAMIN D3

To be fair I should also point out that simply supplements also supply the WRONG type of vitamin d. so avoid buying Vitamin d from anywhere that doesn't specifically state they supply VITAMIN D3.

You can get Vitamin D3 from Holland &Barrett
    Vitamin D Tablets (400iu) 001140 100Tablets 400iU Normally: £2.99 Now: £1.49
This is particularly important for older readers as metabolism of D2 is impaired with age.

Which makes here as good a place as any to ask you Ted, where's the cheapest place to buy the 'right' kind of Vitamin D - is H&B now cheaper than the other place I've been getting it from? Have just introduced DH to its delights and he's pointed out that each tub is only going to last about a week!

I buy mine from BIO-TECH Pharmacal Inc.The best source for Vitamin D3 Cholecalciferol. With postage they worked out around £17 for 250 but these are 5000iu and the MAXIMUM needed is 4000iu daily (if you're depressed or pregnant or both)=28000iu week so there is no need to take one of these every day. 5 one week 6 then next would average 4000iu/d.

The half life of D3 is around 3 weeks so if you'd find it easier to take your weeks supply regularly on one specific day it wouldn't make any significant difference.

    100x400= 40,000 = £1.49
    8x 5000 = 40,000
    250 / 8 = 31.25
    £17.00 / 31.25 = 54.4p
So buying 250 x 5000iu works saves you money.
These Biotec capsules are very tiny. If you object to the capsule coating (these are sometimes not veggie) it's dead easy to slide the ends of the capsule apart and shake the contents onto your food.

Cholecalciferol survives baking so you could if you wanted to provide a weeks supply of (4000iu/d) for 2 (56000iu/week) in your biscuit/muffin/cake making you could slide apart 11 capsules shake the contents into your biscuit/cake mix and providing it was well mixed you could forget your capsules for that week. This may be a useful strategy for providing for a person who memory/dexterity wasn't up to taking tiny capsules.

The toxicity issue ONLY is relevant if you actually took 2 of these daily for at least a year.

There is no need, for people who get sunlight in the summer, to continue taking these between APRIL and SEPTEMBER. Similarly if you go for a Winter holiday in the Canaries leave the D3 at home. The 250 in the container should last the 2 of you over the winter. If you really felt the need to economise taking 3 of these 5000iu capsules a week would provide 15000iu which equates to 2000iu/d an amount that will keep someone with high summer reserves at a reasonably high level thoughout the Winter.

Are these one and the same? If not, why do we need d3?
