  • I don't believe they can take money from your bank account but instead take it from your PayPal account. If this causes the account to have a negative balance the owner of the account is expected to add funds so that the balance is positive.

What if you unknowingly receive a Paypal payment - and instantly transfer/withdraw it into your bank account BEFORE you get a message from Paypal?

Can they take the money out of your bank account without your permission (now that its not sitting in the Paypal account)?
paypal keep the money for 8 days before transfering it in to the bank - it should take instant but they take their time.....

If you have a bank account linked to your paypal account, and verified, then yes they can and they do.

Been there, done that, got the t shirt (to the tune of them taking £400+ because of a similar transaction SIX WEEKS after they authorised the transaction)

paypal should still cover this, after all, it was using their merchant system, and the seller did not know untill it was too late..... but we all know paypal will not bother as they dont want to damage their profits.

Last year I sold my old phone on Paypal, for about £120 I think. The high bidder paid by Paypal, I sent the phone the same day, and a few evenings later I received a phone call from the woman who had won my phone. God knows how I'd ended up leaving my number on the phone but stupidly I had! She was a total cow and said she'd sent me an email that day to which I hadn't responded, so I apologised, said I'd not seen it yet and told her I would check my email So, monday morning I checked my email and the email she had sent was sent less than an hour before she rung me! Basically her problem was that in the title for the auction I had put 'i' on the end of the model of the phone (6230i I think it was), because that was what I thought it was. She demanded a refund so I apologised for what was a genuine mistake, but told her I couldn't refund her money until the following week as I had already transferred the money from my Paypal account to my bank account, and as at the time I was being paid £140 weekly I didn't have the money to put back into my Paypal account until it cleared which from experience takes 3-5 working days. I had booked Thursday and Friday off work that week as the Friday was my 21st Birthday, so when the money hadn't cleared by the end of work on Wednesday I emailed her to let her know that it hadn't cleared, and explained that as it was my birthday I wouldn't be online to sort anything out until the monday. On monday I checked and discovered that, rather than wait til the monday for me to transfer the money back to her, she had lodged a complaint with Paypal and had the money reversed. This took my accoount about £115 into the negative, and meant my account was on hold until it was resolved. Paypal said it could take up to 21 days for them to reach a decision.... Basically I got to read her complaint, which was a total load of crap, and got to give my side, in which I explained what she had said, my responses and the fact that other than the title line the advert was completely correct, and the photographs taken were of the phone I had sent which she was claiming they weren't. Since 6230 and 6230i are completely identical outwardly how she could assume the photo's were fake I don't know..... Anyway, after 27(!) days, during which time she had emailed me constantly telling me to give her her money back, and left me negative feedback saying I wouldn't give her a refund and sold the phone under false pretences (since my paypal account was frozen I was unable to give her a refund anyway, which I explained to her, and told her that as she started the complaint procedure rather than allow me to enjoy my birthday in peace and wait an entire extra day for her money, it was entirely her own fault that it was being dragged out like this), Paypal contacted me to say they had ruled in her favour, and my account was unlocked, and was £115 in the negative. (There is a point to this incredibly long story and I am getting there now!) I received the phone back from her, minus the extra things I had included (02 sim card, extra charger and memory card) and was reasonably annoyed with the situation, so decided not to credit my account just yet, and to wait and see what Paypal said. They said nothing. So as far as I know, I have my phone back, the woman has been refunded the amount she paid, yet I still have the £115 in my bank account. Weeks went by with my checking my account daily, nothing. No emails from them, no complaints or requests to credit my account, so after a month I decided it'd be safe to sell the phone again (amusingly, for £5 more than last time) using my mums Paypal account. The man paid for the phone, left positive feedback and my mum transferred the money to her bank then gave it to me. So at this point I have been paid twice for the phone. I continued to check my Paypal, no change. Then early this year, after a few months of not checking, I was very very bored in work and I suddenly remembered my Paypal account. I checked it, and was about £22 in credit!! I was confused so I checked the history to see what had happened, but it showed no activity for months, and no evidence to suggest my account had ever been in the negative! Out of curiousity I bought some stuff on ebay and used my account to pay, and it went through no problems. So I decided to quit while I was ahead and close the account, certain that they'd realise their error and demand the money back. But the only problem I had was trying to close my account while in credit, so I opted to donate the last £7 in my account to charity, and my account was closed!

I am so sorry that ended up so long winded but I wanted to make sure it made sense, which hopefully it does! And I just wanted to be able to say with a smug smile, yes Paypal suck, but just once in a while, someone gets to screw Paypal back. Yippee!!
  • Hi guys I need your help, the situation that I have found myself in is as follows:

I sold a mobile on eBay worth £180 (because I needed the money im a student), the buyer paid me via paypal straight away and the next day I promptly posted the mobile abroad, I took out extra insurance since it was a high value item. The buyer had relatively good feedback.

After I had sent the mobile I got I email from paypal informing me that I shouldn’t send the mobile to the customer because they were investigating the transaction, to cut a long story short the scum bag that paid me had used someone else’s paypal account. Paypal have since reversed the transaction (I am out of pocket!!) and I have sent the mobile to the address that was in the paypal invoice (which I have since discovered is not verified!!), so therefore because I shipped to an unconfirmed address I am not covered by paypals seller protection. This has left me out of pocket to the tune of £185 +PP.

Can some one tell me were I stand with regards to this? And also if I have anyway of being able to recoup my losses?
Also if someone can tell me what the royal mail insurance actually covers me for/against?

I am really p’ed of because paypal I feel has ripped me off!!

    Your feedback is most welcome!!
    Cheers

PS: stay away from international buyers!! I will never touch them again with the longest bargepole in the world, and if this helps anyone else atleast something will come out of a bad situation.

Hi I thought i would give you guys an update about the above, and it is as follows:

I finally have decided to take paypal to the small claims court (birmingham). I will be getting the relevent forms tomorrow in the post. It will be costing me about £50 or so I am told. (I have not had a mobile for over 3 weeks now becasue i have no money to buy one with) Since I am a student and can not afford to get a laywer, I will be representing myself, has any one got any tips? or if there are any lawyers i would appreciate your help. I feel its about time someone gave paypal a bloody nose!! they just seem to take the mick with us ( uk consumers). Paypal probably thing I am calling their bluff but they dont no how determained I am!!

Also if anyone else is in the same boat as me get incontact with me so if possible we can jointly bing a class action against them.

help of any sort and any form is most appreciated.

    cheers

If it was an individual I'd say go for it, but I fear that no good will come of taking PP to small claims... in fact, can you even? It's a US company.

As you are a student I'd regretfully suggest cutting your losses.

I'm afraid I'm a realist, not a pessimist :) To me £50 is money I'd rather not throw away... and trying to sue paypal would be like trying to sue ebay. A waste of time.

Seriously. Check your T&Cs. They can do this to you.
