New Clutch on Toyota Aygo
I took my 2007 Aygo into Toyota today as I was finding it hard to put it into gear. It has approx 25000 miles on it, and after reading about it on the internet have realised this was inevitable
They rang me to say they will try to adjust it and see if that makes any difference but if not it will need a new clutch at the cost of £450  The warrenty ran out in March so it's a case of saving up...
I rang my local garage where I've taken my car in the past and they have quoted me £283 inc labour and VAT. Is this a good price? It's damn better than £450 but I have no idea whether I'm being ripped off or not.
I also asked how long I have until it needs replacing, (I know ASAP is the obvious answer, but I don't have that kind of money spare as I've just bought a house...) but he said he cannot give me a time limit.
Has anybody else had this problem, and is it dangerous for me to be driving it?
Thanks in advance.

£283 seems quite a reasonable price. It is impossible to say how long it'll last because it is all dependant on your style of driving and type of journey. My grandad had problems with his feet and would go through a clutch every year.
No its not dangerous to be driving it. It'll get to the point it will start slipping when setting off which will be the point its an immediate job.0 -
Thanks!
Would it be worth finding out exactly what it is I need from Toyota, then buying it from somewhere like Europarts and getting a garage to fit it?
Only thinking of doing it the cheapest way possible...0 -

Such poor service from a modern car is lamentable.
Is the failure a mechanical failure, i.e its crap design/part or is it just that you dont know how to drive..i.e ride the clutch etc??
For comparison my 19year old Golf with closing on 100k miles is on its original clutch and nowhere near worn.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
Just remember that if you are having problems getting it into gear then you may cause damage to the gearbox, though you could try double declutching and trying to match your revs a bit better, you can drive without a clutch, I once did this in a Renault 5 when the clutch cable snapped, bit jerky starting it in gear, then just matched the revs correctly and slotted it in.
One of the main issues with a car that is short on torque is that you will slip the clutch more on hillstarts and when reversing into parking spaces, if the clutch isn't slipping I would be inclined to just try and take it easy on the clutch, if it has a cable then get it changed with a new OE spec part, not sure if it has a cable but as the dealer is trying to adjust the clutch then there is a good chance it has a cable.
I would always start with the cheapest part when confronted with this kind of problem, also make sure that any mats fitted are not stopping the clutch pedal going all the way down to the floor, and also some people think that you don't have to have the clutch all the way down, in some cars you need to, my wifes Clio is one, though it is an ex fleet car that was used around Manchester, so the clutch had a fairly hard time, if you don't push the clutch all the way down it can be abit sticky to change.0 -
There is a known problem with clutches on some Aygos - some owners have had them changed under warranty. If your car has FSH it may be worth a call to Toyota HQ to see if they will contribute towards having it changed.0

One thats spent all its life driving around town/city would have done many dozens of times as many gearchanges as one that doesn't.
Take my 200 mile round trip to Nottingham. Once I leave my town I have a few dozen gearchanges over 30 miles and then do 60 miles on the motorway with none. A car going round town for 60 miles will do hundreds with many of them being starting from standstill.0 -
Just booked my car in to have its new clutch. Managed to get it down to £275.00.
Toyota also rang me today trying to sell me a brand new Aygo!!! The bloody cheek of it0 -

It is a crap design apperently, and I most definitely know how to drive.
A few people have told me that this is an issue with Aygo, C1, and the 107. After a couple of years or 20000 miles they start to break due to them being made so cheaply. All the garages I called round have said the same thing, Toyota of course denied that there was an issue with them...
My warranty ran out in March
As long as it will last until tomorrow until I get it into the garage, I don't do buses0 -
I think they now fit a slightly larger 190mm clutch to these now. This should put less strain on the whole thing and should last much longer. You may want to check.0
