Can you keep your maidan name on your passport?

Hi everyone.

We got married yesterday (10-10-10) :j

But can my wife now keep her maidan on her passport and change everything else over?

Just when we book holiday etc make sure to use her old name?

I'm pretty sure you can, but she thinks no

Any help would be great

Yes she can, I got married 2 years ago (to this very day) and my passport is still in my maiden name. You just have to remember to book travel in the name on the passport.

Yes I did. I had just over 2 years left on my passport and wasn't prepared to pay the fee for changing the name over for that space of time. Everything used to have to go in my maiden name though, travel and insurance so the name matched the name in the passport.
  • Yep, that's what i've done!

My driving licence is under my married name (for I.D purposes), but I decided to keep my passport in my maiden name as I had to renew my passport 3 months before we were married and i'd be damned if I was spending another £70 a couple of months after for a name change!

One of my friends has been married 6 years and never changed her passport yet, she's always travelled in her maiden name :)

Benn married 6 months now though and will do it soon.

The important thing is that the name on the booking and the name on the passport are the same.

I am getting married next summer. I will assume the use of my husband's surname upon marriage*

My passport does not expire until November 2012 however, so I will continue to use it for travel. When I get it renewed, I will send my marriage cert. along and get it changed into my married name.

*Legally it isn't a name change it's a matter of custom and practise so either name can be used. :)

As others have said, yes its fine and many people do it simply to avoid forking out for a new passport. Just remember that any flight tickets you book must also be in the maiden name as airlines are very strict with this and if you forget will charge you to change it. For things like hotel bookings etc I haven't had a problem booking in my married name but checking in with a different name in the passport. She could always carry a photocopy of her marriage certificate to clarify things if there ever was an issue.

  • Yes, I have my passport in my maiden name but everything else in my married name. The registrar advised me to take a copy of my marriage certificate with me at all times-in my nightmares, I can imagine being in a foreign country and not being able to explain why my bank cards are in a different name!!!

I still have my maiden name on passport (too expensive to change), bank account (was filling forms and got confused whether to think of a new signature, never went back), ebay and paypal (the beaurocracy scares me), driving licence and reg papers (again, money).

So these days when anyone asks me 'what name' I never know what to say :o. Nobody has ever batted an eyelash at this strange behaviour though... It's been four years and the only time I had a problem was when I took my son out of the country, but the immigration officer just stared at me and took my word for it that we were related.

yes you can, my passport is in my maiden name, i didnt change it when i married my ex, i then went througha divorce and back to my maiden name. i am married again but i will get it changed to hubbys surname when i need to renew it next year. as people said you just have to book the hol in the same name.
  • I got married last year last year on 09/09/09! I still have my maiden name on my passport and it will stay there until I renew it in 8 years time!! I just need to remember to book the tickets in my maiden name.
  • Funnily enough the technical answer is actually no according to the passport website- it says your passport must be in your legal name (see link below). I doubt the passport police will come and get you, however a lot of forms such as CRBs and driving license forms ask for your passport number to use in verification. I had to do a CRB form recently and my passport is currently in my old married name so I had to pretend I didn't have one and am now getting it changed over before I next travel. Here is the link:
