IB changes I live on my own very scared

I live on my own in a council property, what happens if I get threw off Incapacity Benefit?

I have been on this since the early 90's due to very genuine ill health. I don't think I will cope with these changes, I am even thinking now about ending it all.

I don't have kids or a partner, so there is no one for me to have help me through these hard times. Because of the changes coming in I take it that all companies are about to go bust, I am having my phone and internet cut off, getting rid of TV licence, and am looking at as many ways as possible on the financial side, thing is the mental health and physical problems are becoming very bad now.

Doesn't this government realise that by doing what they are going to do, that businesses are going to go bust big time. I find food prices and living expenes leave me with very little, and now they the government are taking away what I need to live on a daily basis.

If you fail any medical assessment you will be able to appeal the decision.

If the appeal fails you can claim JSA.

Not everybody is going to be removed from incapacity benefit. Is there a particular reason you are so worried? Has your condition changed in the couple of decades you have been claiming?

Fraud cases tend to be about 0.5%
    2.6million people are on IB
Cameron wants at least 500,000 off IB

That's closer to 20% so 19.5% of people who lose their benefit, will actually be genuine people who need the help. This is why people are scared, it's basically a lottery, 1 in 5 people will have their lives ripped to shreds through no fault of their own, when they are the people who need the help the most. And no one cares.

Does no one realise the Child Benefit cuts for high earners is only being done to cover up the morally corrupt changes to the benefits system. High earners lose nothing anyway, Cameron said they get tax breaks which are roughly equal to the CB they would have got.

I think you are being a little optimistic with the 20% failure rate. In reality, if the results of the current ESA claims are anything to go by, only about 20% actually pass the medical. Take into account those that win on appeal and the figure goes up to about 37%. The balance - 63% will fail to get ESA. That figure does include those that stop their claim before they get to the medical stage for whatever reason.

You would therefore stand only a 2 in 5 chance of getting ESA at any rate of payment.

We will soon have the results from the two pilot areas that started this week quite shortly. Then we will see how they compare to the already ESA results.

The government was very surprised with such a high failure rate, but pleased that the new medical is doing what it is supposed to do.

I have altered your statement to make it more accurate.

To the OP - please contact the Samaritans, free of charge, to help you through your current low period. Does your GP know how low you are feeling?

"Samaritans provides confidential non-judgemental emotional support, 24 hours a day for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which could lead to suicide.Whatever you're going through, whether it's big or small, don't bottle it up. We are here for you if you're worried about something, feel upset or confused, or just want to talk to someone. We offer our service by telephone, email, letter and face to face in most of our branches."

Don’t panic – only worry about the things you can control and influence. You can hope for the best but prepare for the worse without unnecessarily winding yourself up.

For example, you won’t necessarily fail the ESA medical, which may take years for the assessments on all IB claimants to complete. Those in the work support groups and those moving to JSA will have support to find appropriate work anyway.

You can model the potential change in your benefit entitlements by putting the scenario of you transitioning onto JSA of £65.45 per week on the Turn2us online benefit calculator.

Those in council accommodation have fairly secure lifetime tenancies, eviction is a complete last resort, the social housing landlord always tries to work with the tenants to resolve arrears.

Download the budget planner on the free tools section of this website to help you work through MSE to identify where you can make savings.

If you have debts, post the information on the Debt Free wanabee board and they will be able to give you advice.

You sound a bit low and isolated. Are you able to undertake any voluntary work which will get you out of the house, meeting people, improving your CV and helping your confidence?

The forthcoming benefit changes proposed by the current govt (which may or may not get implemented, we shall see) do sound harsh. The trick is, if you can manage it, not to take it personally. They are aimed to change the system rather than punish the individual claimants, and though to be honest, they do sound harsh and even punitive, don't take fright by assuming only pessimistic scenarios.
