Need more RAM - but have a problem
There are RAM-related issues with my PC, and I was looking to increase the amount. I have done the upgrade check from Crucial and the result is not encouraging:
According to our scan, your system already has the maximum amount of memory installed.Currently installed memory:
1GB
DDR PC2-5300
1GB
Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-8500, DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.
What are my options? I am not a pc expert by any stretch, but can find my way inside the pc to install/remove stuff.
Thanks!

Oh, it says my motherboard is : Giga-Byte GA-945GZM-S2 (rev. 3.x) Motherboard0

According to Crucial, it supports 2Gb and you already have 2Gb. If your PC already has the maximum it can support, then you need a new motherboard or PC.
Why do you think you need more memory? What OS are you running? What program do you think needs more memory?0 -
I'm using Vista (came with the PC - I know 2gb is the minimum for this), and my kids are having problems with world of warcraft crashing due to, it says, ram issues - I don't know the exact error as they have only recently told me, and they are at their dad's house just now till tomorrow so I can't ask them. If its important I can phone to find out.0

That motherboard only supports up to 2Gb of memory, so you can't upgrade it any more. Maybe you need to clean up your software a bit and as Inner Zone says, why do you think more memory is required?

according to this http://us.test.giga-byte.com/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=2467 they are reporting correctly that it has a maximum of 2gb of ram,
the error message would be helpful however i would guess that they could only tell you that its a ram problem at the moment and not the actually error code
you will probably be best at the moment to run all the normal system maintenance bits and bobs, (malwarebytes, hijackthis) so we can see whats running and try and help tune it a bit,Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
Posts crossed in the ether there. Vista is notoriously slow and generally rubbish. You could look at upgrading to Windows 7 since you can't upgrade the memory. But run the Windows Upgrade Advisor first to check if your existing hardware and software will operate under Windows 7.

Is it? I have various machines, running vista on some, 7 on others (£38 upgrade from XP licence FTW), I certainly remember when vista was released in...er...2006 it did have a lot of problems, hardware requirements being one, but also the big change for XP, and things like UAC designed to protect the users from their own errors were hard for users to understand/accept at first (myself included). Since the service packs vista has become a pretty good, and stable, operating system.

In my experience it is. I have a machine which was purchased with Vista on it, but I have since upgraded to Windows 7 and am much happier with its performance.
I have run XP, Vista and Windows 7 on the same machine with identical configuration . It's difficult to compare real performance, but just timing the boot up to a usable system gave similar figures for XP and Win 7, with over twice as long for Vista - and once Vista booted, it was slow to use. Shutdowns were similar too.
Much as I hate to give money to Micro$oft, I felt I had to pay to get rid of Vista, even if I replaced it with another of their products!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards.
