Interesting to get your views, Poppy. Do Welsh police forces have a recruitment problem? They probably won't improve the T's & C's unless they have. That's what I've found in the past, amyway.

I must have a chat with my neighbour who is a policeman in South Wales (his house is worth about £185K by the way)

South Wales only recruit once a year usually so no recruitment problem. This is the case with a lot of jobs though in S. Wales i.e. teachers, firemen, Local Govt, civil service etc as lots of work here is low paid and often tourism based. Housing used to be cheap but now it's far out of the range of most first time buyers. A small traditional terraced house in a not very good area, with poor schools will set you back £140k. A decent semi in a decent area is £250k, a detached £300k+. If we were talking about Cardiff then the prices would be much higher but I'm in South West Wales so more rural.

not here in Wales I can't link into SWP fed site as it's password protected but starting salary is less than £20k upon completion of initial training. Rises about £1k per annum for each year of service.

On commencing service pay is around £20k, but after initial training rises to around £22.5k. However it keeps rising, so after 10 years service is £32k.

But before deciding whether that is too much or too little, have a look at the video here (although not if you are faint-hearted) - http://coppersblog.blogspot.com/2006/09/three-percent-anyone.html

I've been studying the property and jobs markets here in Newport as I have just recruited an IT Technician in the public sector and will be buying a house soon.

I had 29 applications for the £13K p.a. job, including graduates and people with years of experience. £140K will easily buy you a nearly new two bed terrace with garage in a decent area. £185K will buy a 4 bed terrace.
