Will I lose my Disability Living Allowance?

Hi all,

I'm a little bit worried about my claim for Disability Living Allowance as everywhere I read these days there is some really unfair press about how all disabled people are "scroungers" and that we're going to lose our extra support under the impending Spending Review, that isn't right at all. I've been on Disability Living Allowance for a few years now and currently receive the Middle Rate Care and Low Rate Mobility. This is a "indefinite" award and I'm not really sure what that means, hence my worrying about everything, especially in the current setting of vast spending cuts. I really rely on my Disability Living Allowance to help with my disablities and the assosciated costs with it and I don't know what I'd do if I lost it. I'm more than happy to have a medical or whatever is needed but it's the constant worry of what if I lose it and what if they stop it at any moment that is really getting to me.

I was awarded this benefit within seven days on my first attempt and had the support of countless health professionals and my doctor who all sent along supporting proof for my claim. What I feel is that if all these people have stated that I'm entitled to it then WHY do I (and countless other) disabled people have to endure continual bad press about how we're not as disabled as we make out or that Disability Living Allowance might even be scrapped altogether! I guess I'm just looking for reassurance, could they stop my payments just like that? how long is an "indefinite" award and do you think I'm worrying over nothing or do I have every right to be worried with the way things are going at the moment? appreciate your help. I just want to know that my payments are safe and that I can stop worrying :)

  • I believe that medicals are coming in from 2013 for all claimants of DLA. My son also receives an indefinite award, which means that there is no end date for the award. The DLA unit can check at any time that you are still receiving the correct amount.

Personally, I'm not worrying about it - I've enough to worry about already. My son will pass the medicals as he has complex needs, all lifelong conditions. Caring for him is tiring without worrying about what might happen in the future.

I think that the intention of medicals is to weed out the minority who manage to play the system or who make fraudulent claims.

These people in power are turning the country into the Gestapo like mentality, look the person next door he has a new car on mobility, if he can drive he can work, oh look he can lift a pen, he can write all day and get a job behind a desk and make a living instead of scrounging on the state. What some stupid senseless people don’t know is yes he can write and yes they can drive, but how long for ?. for instance I do drive but only down road etc as I get knackerd any further so would not risk it in line with my driving conditions. i also can lift and use a pen but only for writing my name as much more knackers my hands and arms etc. so do i go and get a job as a artos examiner as they only have to press a button. what ever next how do they know what i am like when i get up which could be at 8.30 or 12.00 depending on pain level and whether i am feeling reasonable. now i have to weight for one of the big mouthed i no everything brigade that bashes everyone on these forums and we all know who they are. what a bloody life. tell u what give me a four week holiday then i can come back and go doctors and get free put me down drugs, the government will save enough then for the mp to have anther meal in some posh restaurant. ooooohhh i feel bloody angry at the scums that put us down for being ill. there had my say and yes my spelling is bad also. totally agree with all you sat snoopy89
  • I'm not quite sure why they are making out medicals are a new thing...I had one in 1999 and then another in 2006, both conducted by ATOS for my DLA.

Jo - was that in your home or somewhere else? I had one at home, and was just curious if other people had to travel to theirs.

I think what they mean is in some cases they do medicals, but not everyones. I think the new rules will mean everyone will have to have one.

  • Mine were at home, jazzabelle. It's not quite such a big deal as they make out then, is it, as it's just treating all DLA claimants the same? (crossing my wonky fingers as mine's up for renewal next summer).

Any one who is a genuine claimant has absolutely no need to worry.

I think we all know someone who is scamming the system and the scammers will be found out.

    So stop worrying.

I totally agree with this. Please don't worry. I know many who are scamming the system and get away with it for now!! I realised a long time ago, not to worry as my condition affects me differently on a daily basis and be unpredicatable to say the least. There are many and countless reasons why someones health can affect them and only you know how yours affect you.

Has it been confirmed that child claimants will be included? I remember the statement seemed to suggest that only "working age" claimants would be reassessed.
