AA are taking advantage of young drivers

Thanks for your replies.
No he didn't get the renewal, and even if he did they would still have to prove it.
well no they wouldnt, given the original policy would state it was an auto renewal policy
Oh was it you that signed him up? Unless you did I cant see how you know with such certainty what he agreed too
see above
I am shocked at some of the prices you are all quoting. My son has just paid £165 to these robbing swines for his cover.
well i dont see the relevance.you shop around and get the best price you are prepared to pay

I am furious as he is a 19yr old apprentice and doesn't earn much, He is paying for his car finance and the disgustingly high cost of insurance as well as the running of the car.
It's only "disgustingly high" because he is 19 and it's risk-based pricing.
Statistically, young drivers are indeed high risk and he has to pay for the indiscretions of his peers.
Once he has a few years no-claims bonus under his feet and he turns 21 and then 25 it will come down drastically.0 -
Unformtunately young men are an incredibly high risk to insurers. they are responsible for 98% of dangerous driving convictions and 93% of speeding convictions. they are also more likely than any other age group to kill one of their passengers in a collision. In my opinion young male drivers should have to wait until they are 25 before they can drive with a full license without restrcitions - but there you go. his high insurnace premiums are simply because he is young and male.Maybe her should just catch the bus like I did at that age.having a car and driving isn't a right - it needs to be earned and paid for. But at least he has insurance as his age group are also more likely to not bother getting it.0

1) you can get RAC or AA cover for as little as £28 (with £19 or so cashback) ...what sort of cover did he opt for?
2) autorenewal has been a feature of AA, RAC signups for some time, you have to agree to this and tick the box when you sign up online (you are still notified a month before renewal)
3) robbing swines?...I can't see how...he chose the options himself...
4) where he stands....probably at the side of the road if he breaks down and doesn't have cover now...
5) why the surly answer above, because you asked, got the answers and still don't want to accept who's to blame.I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j
Those who can do, those who can't, come to me for lessons:cool:0 -
royzor just follow pinkshoes example. However you should write the letter for your son and get him to sign it. Send it to the AA via recorded delivery so they don't deny receiving it. The complaints address is in the policy booklet or you can download it from the web.
While auto-renewal policies are legal any insurance company doing them should send out a reminder in the post and be able/happy to prove they did send out a letter. The fact you didn't receive it is a different argument.
I complained to the FSA about Bells policy a couple of years back, as even though Bell had cancelled my auto-renewal before I got stung by it, they weren't polite in doing so.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

folks its breakdown cover we are talking about
not insurance
the age of the car,not driver is more relevant0 -

Exactly what I was thinking.
My 13 year old rover bless it is considered high risk so all the major companies want well over a ton for the cover. Go compare got me it with every bell and whistle for 22 quid, sorted!
As to the op, its not a scam, our a rip off or any other form of deceipt. It's common, its legal, and nobodies but your own fault for not remembering. The reminders are exactly that. They are rarely ever a requirement so not receiving it is not an excuse and not a get out card.
Treat this as a lesson you don't want to repeat and put a reminder on your phone and pc!Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
Update on AA Auto renewal
My son telephoned AA Tonight after I looked out his original contract that he signed last year. There was 5 payment options to choose from A, B, C, D, and E. My son had chose
B - Single payment - Credit/Debit Card
But the sales person took his bank account and sort number from his debit card when my son gave it to him to process his payment and filled in option
E - Quarterly Direct Debit
He did not sign or tick any box to authorise auto renewal. Why the sales person put his bank details in i don't know, as he paid the full price with his card.
When he phoned AA again for the 4th time, they refused to refund yet again. My son asked to speak to someone higher up and was put through to a cancelations advisor. The advisor informed my son he had his contract in front of him and claimed my son had authorised auto renewal. My son pointed out he also had his contract in front of him and that he could not find anywhere on it authorising A/R.
To cut a long story short the very nice advisor agreed that they should never had taken payment from his account and is refunding the full premium including any bank charges my son incurred.
So if you are a MSE member Mr AA man and you read this post, I would like to say thankyou Very much you made a young man very happy tonight. :A :j0 -
Do you also know that if you are no longer allowed to drive (older driver with eyesight problems) that the AA will not refund any of your membership (10 months in this elderly relatives case) and will also not allow you to use it as a passenger. Which you can if you are able to drive and are a passenger in another car. A nice c £80 for nothing. I will be cancelling my renewal after that little fiasco!0
