I suppose i could give it a go, it just seems rather unusual. I just wish he'd been a bit more openminded about the length (there's a filthy joke in there somewhere).

A good friend of mine had a church wedding, hotel reception - all the traditional works... She was walking past a window with her husband, saw a dress in the window on sale and went in with him, tried it on and he bought it....

Who cares what 'traditional' normally is. If it makes you happy go for it and personally, I completely understand your reasons for wanting a short dress.
    I love surprises!

He suggested going to a shop with me and seeing me in some because seeing them on the internet isn't the same as seeing me in them, but i don't think you're supposed to do it like that.

My OH went wedding dress shopping with me, and it worked out really well. I know some people think it's bad luck for the groom to see the bride in the dress before the day, so it probably depends on how superstitious you are.

that's whats weird, it doesn't bother me. I did all the tradition stuff the first time and was filing for divorce four years later.

h2b on the other hand wants to stick with tradition, which is why his suggestion surprised me so much.

    Hi Twirly,

I've been having a similar kind of issue with my H2B. I had my heart set on wearing a purple dress, because the whole pure, chaste innocence symbology represented by wearing white just doesn't seem relevant to me!! He, however, couldn't see past the 'bride in a white dress' tradition, and although he did say that it is up to me what I wear I wanted to make sure he would be happy as well, rather than just doing what I wanted regardless.

When we were at a couple of wedding fayres yesterday we discussed it a bit more (prompted by a fashion show where one of the mother of the bride dresses being modelled was the exact colour I wanted, until he remarked that he didn't like the colour because it was 'too bold and in your face' :( Gutted!!). We then looked round a bit more, and I found a dress which, although not my style, was a beautiful oyster colour, which I hadn't even considered before. It would also go brilliantly with the other colours we both want, so I am now thinking of an oyster dress with purple accessories, including the brightest most kick-!!! purple shoes ever :D

The point of my interminable rambling is that, yes, you can if you want wear a shorter dress, and he will still think you are beautiful because you are his bride, but you may also find a dress you completely fall for that is nearer his idea of a wedding dress.

Good luck with your search, let us know how it goes!

  • I wanted a red dress and I think the OH was a little sceptical although he has supported the decision fully - we went for a meal the other week to our venue and they had a wedding on - the bride was at the bar when we walked in and he went wow! That made me and my MoH grin - not that my dress was anything like it, it was just that he said he like the colour and maybe it wasn't so odd after all!

If he doesn't want to see you in the dress maybe get someone in the shop to try it on - personally I would let him come and shop just not let him know which one I had chosen! x
