push virgin for a free one

New customers: Free withBroadband L or XL
Existing customers: Free with Broadband L and XL if you've never had broadband with us, £60 when you upgrade to Broadband L, or free when you upgrade to Broadband XL.
Well, as you state, you have to upgrade to a more expensive package thus rendering it 'not free'. I bought a brand new one off ebay for £10 which doesn't tie me in for another year. I'm happy with that as the quidco cashback on the ipod touch i bought for the wife covers it.

okay so got my WGR614v9 wireless router and have successfully connected it and have managed to get the pc and my iphone on the internet fine. The only issue i have is that i cannot, at all, manage to log in to my router to set up encryption security. I had no CD to set up with so it keeps telling me to log in via routerlogin.net/.com etc etc. It tells me to put in the default password etc or the modified one to enable access to it but it just will not connect at all. Will a rerasonably complicated password be enough? also i can't update any firmware for the router like this!! More help please

right can you login into the router, use the login details on the bottom of the router,

secondly yes you can change the password used to login into the router

    http://www.routerlogin.net
    or here -
    http://www.routerlogin.com
    or here -
    http://192.168.1.1/

You should then be asked for -
    user name - admin
    password - password

Why do you want to mess with the firmware?!

type in 192.168.1.1 into your browser, that should log you into the router. (best to do it on ethernet otherwise you will get kicked off when you change the settings)

if a log in box comes up (if it is a virgin brand router) the username is virgin and password is password. (or on the bottom of the router).

in the screen that comes up just go through the options, wireless settings will be there. (while you're there you can change the SSID to something more unique rather than eg 'wireless router')
click on it and scrol down select WPA2 AES and the PSK (passcode) should be as random and as long as possible (maximum is 63 characters using letters numbers and symbols)
write down the passcode and click save/apply
    click log out.

then just reconnect your devices to the router. using the passcode you have just written down

No. Especially if it's originally a Virgin one - I suspect they modify the Netgear firmware

if it is a virgin brand router then you cannot update the firmware unless you debrand the router (which you can but there isn't much real world advantage to do it)

to OP here is the manual to your router (pdf) http://kb.netgear.com/ci/fattach/get/27/1239127755/redirect/1
