I second the Netgear router as well, good enough for what you should need.
I use one and it is good enough for my needs.
You can get the VM packaged one from eBay new for £13 delivered.

yes I also have to say DON'T get belkin you will only feel a bag of hurt (I have had 2 belkin routers and they are very unreliable).
I would say get a netgear router this one here has wireless N which both the ipod touch 4g and the iphone 4 can use and 4 ethernet ports which you can use for your PC. also this is by linsys and should be equally as good
setting then up is easy, first read the instructions each different router has a specific way you should first connect them up, sometimes it is plug in power first sometimes plug in modem first.
the general set up is cable modem connected through ethernet to the WAN port of the router, then ethernet cable from one of the routers LAN ports to the PC, then on your PC after it has 'conected' you open your internet browser and type (on netgear it is) 192.168.1.1 (the number will be in the instructions) this opens the routers settings and you go through them all to set up.
for virgin cable you need dynamic IP in the broadband settings.
you select wireless 'ON' if it isnt already, you type in a new SSID and and you secure it using WPA2 AES PSK (type in the password where it tells you to) both of which the ipod touch and iphone support.
try to make the password as long as you can (upto 63 charecters) and random as you can you only need to type it in on the ipod/iphone once and they remember it.
and thats it you shouldnt need to think about the router again0 -
One thing to watch with VM is that they know the MAC address of the connected equipment and only that is authorised to connect through the modem. You can get round it by buying a router that has the ability to "clone" a MAC address and use the MAC address of the PC you currently use. Failing that, you would have to call VM when you try to connect the new router and tell them you're connecting some new equipment. I have an old 3Com wireless router plugged into my VM cable modem and it has the clone capability, so it does mean I can either use the router or the main PC with matching MAC address plugged directly into the modem.

that changed a few years ago
no need to give VM MAC addresses now0 -

they only need to know the MAC address of the modem (which if your internet is working they already have) and is not affected at all with any amount of changes to the routers (bacause the modem doesn't change) or of the PCs. (I know I have changed my router several times with my cable broadband)0 -
Another thumbsup for the Netgear WGR614
Been on constantly for years without problem, also bought a second for my dads house it was that good.0 -
Thanks custardy and jayme1.
Took the plunge and disabled the cloning of my MAC address on my wireless router and after a reboot of the VM modem, everything worked.:)I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Unfortunately, my internet connection was lost overnight and to get it back I put back the cloned MAC address in my wireless router, so my earlier post is something to be aware of...One thing to watch with VM is that they know the MAC address of the connected equipment and only that is authorised to connect through the modem. i dont know why
VM havent required MAC addresses for connected equipment for at least 3+ years(it was back in the telewest days)
I connect multiple PC's and routers through my connection
yes sometimes i need to reboot the modem/router but as long as the modem is that which you registered with VM then it will work0 -
