Even if he/she made it up, it wouldn't be too far away from the truth. At least half of the domestic workers in my local hospital are polish and yet the jobseeker office are pack full everyday with British.... I would think the reason for this is people on jobseeking allowance or other benefits are not interested in doing these jobs but rather want something that will earn them easy money, or better still, just continue living off benefits that the government are giving them....

There is truth in that for a few reasons:

1.Employers like to stereotype - if a company finds that certain types of workers work harder then they will only hire workers in that group and ignore applications from other groups of workers. (I've both benefited and suffered from that in the past.) In addition employers love immigrant groups because they don't know their rights and are easy to exploit.

    2. Some people can't afford to take low paid jobs - due to having high mortgage/ high rent payments taking a low paid job means that they can't afford to pay their mortgage/rent so they won't take the job as they will be worse off. However I know lots of working people who have taken on second jobs.

    3. Some people think that certain jobs are beneath them - I was brought up to do any sort of work there as some young people I know refuse to do some jobs. In fact one of the jobs I took when I was young I had to fight with my mother to be able to do it.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

My nephew has just started a new college course after being thrown off the last one due to poor interim results, and after poor GCSE's meaning he couldn't go into the sixth form.

Despite being 18, he's never done a day's work. Never even had a paper round. He's always moaning that there are "NO JOBS" and uses it as a justification for sponging off his parents (who are too gullible to force him to get a job).

Just had a wonderfully enlightening conversation with him yesterday afternoon when I went round to see my sister. I asked him where is girlfriend was (as they're usually joined at the hip) - she was at work as she has a weekend job at M&S. I then asked about how he was getting on with his golf - turns out he doesn't play much anymore as his main playing partner can't play much these days as he's got a job at the local Sainsbury's. Then I asked where his younger sister was - she was at work as a waitress at the local pub. Then I asked him if he'd been looking for an evening or weekend job - he answered with a "what's the point in looking - there are NO JOBS"! I burst out laughing but he really couldn't understand why!! The irony of it.

Its a good thing to get them out of London and then let rents and house prices fall in the capital.
It will be interesting to discover the true market rental rate once the taxpayer stops subsidising the BTL industry. Maybe then the hardworking poor will be able to compete for decent rental properties. Although I suspect one benefit will be replaced with another.

I'd be very surprised if the harder working poor will ever be able to rent in London without help, of course that does depend on what you call poor.

I meant generally, but take your point.

£500 pcm for a Victorian terrace in Chatham?

So why are the rents so high in an unfashionable area? Probably housing benefit subsidies for rent. Remove those and BTL landlords might sell up making houses more affordable. More locals buying would see a return to civic pride. Probably. Maybe. Hopefully.

You seem to be able to tell an awful lot about someone just by passing them and hearing a tiny snippet of conversation. Either that or you just made this up.

No he was just a typical loud-mouthed chav, who you could hear from quite a distance away, so you got more than a snippet. You got plenty of the there not going to 'ffing well make me do it' aswell. I don't have to make things up, these useless tw&ts make it very clear in moments there lack of interest in doing anything but sponging off the state.

No. Something that is made up is not the truth.

I do not dispute that we have a problem in this country with the above, but assuming things and/or making up nonsense, even in an anecdotal sense, is the kind of false "evidence" that creates more more problems than it solves.

Maybe you should in fact get YOUR facts right. If I post an event on here it will have happened, so don't accuse me of being a liar.

    Then I apologise.
