£500 Ben cap, not enough to live in London

£500 wk cap is not enough for most families to pay rent/council tax and have enough to live on in London.

Even if they could find somewhere to live in London for less than £300 wk rent/council tax they would prefer to live far away from London where less than half of their £500wk cap would go on rent and council tax.

  • I think where there is genuine serious sickness (not back pain etc) then they may need to be more flexible with this as they may well have carers and family locally.

However for those that are on normal benefits then I see no reason why they should not move to cheaper areas. It's not like they have to stay local for a job or anything ;)

i know quite a few people in london in professional roles who earn £26k gross (~20k net) who manage to support themselves and a family. it's a real struggle of course but they manage, so why should people who don't work have it better than this?

edit: just to clarify 'professional roles': I'm talking of 2 chemists, an engineer, 4 physicists and a biologist, all with kids in west london.

There is that 20mil fund to help some stay in London on a temp basis.

This fund is also to help pay for moving people away from London.

Some will be offered thousands cash one off payment incentives to move to cheaper parts of the country.

The government has to do something to chip away at the housing benefit black hole sucking in so much money every month.

I think it is shocking and an indictment of our current system that people who are long term unemployed (and don't want to work - not the genuinely sick) are actually going to be paid if they have to move. It just about sums up everything that is bad about this country. Why not pay the workers more and encourage employment rather than encouraging those not in work with even more cash incentives. This government looks like it is going to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor and punish the conscientious and reward those that have no intention of bettering themselves. How !!!!ing typical.

  • Its a good thing to get them out of London and then let rents and house prices fall in the capital.
