Barclays - Theft payout????

Hi
I lent a sum of money to a friend (not so close a friend now however) and she has claimed that her card was stolen, and my money taken also. (£700)
However, do Barclays (her bank) pay back what is stolen or all bar the first £50 as I have read here and there? It's a debit card and "apparantly" her bag, and wallet in it, were stolen from her in a park... I'd just like to have an affirmative answer, as I don't want to question her story but then it should be a fairly simple process if the bank do infact refund stolen monies.
It has only happened to me, personally, once and for only £80, which was returned, over 10 years ago so I don't know if the rules or if different banks work differently in this situation. Any hep appreciated.

correct, if it's theft, the account holder is only liable for the first £50.
Do also bear in mind that the thief would have needed to know her PIN to get the money.
In practice however, they rarely exercise this and tend to give you back the full amount.0 -
I'm confused. Was the £700 in her "wallet" or in her bank account...and obtained by use of the stolen card/account details?0

odds on that the story's complete tosh and she's therefore playing you.0 -
it is a confusing story, and to be honest I wouldnt believe it, sounds like she doesnt want to/can't pay you back and has made up some ridiculous story to avoid giving you your money back.
sorry, thats just how it appears to me0 -

That's what I am thinking as it was a story she "came up with" 2 months after she said she would pay me back. I have done the decent thing and simply asked her to scan any paperwork and contact with the bank/police regarding the matter - I have given her the chance to uphold her story, but (no surprise) I haven't heard from her.
Without proof I lent her the money I guess I'm a bit screwed...0 -
So just to double check - ALL BANKS?? or SOME BANKS or MOST refund stolen funds in the situation above - ie a normal theft.0

did you hand over cash or do it electronically?
if it was transferred electronically, then you have a fairly good case since it's not really going to be plausible for her to claim you gave the money away.0 -
How did you give her the money? did you transfer it, put in her account or pay her cash? - is there no paper trail?
Has she written to you about the money in an email or anything else?

All Banks refund money as result of theft, as stated may be liable for first £50.Santander are awful - mission in life is to warn people since 17-Sep-10, 18-Sep-10 realised one of thousands.0 -

The money was deposited into her account at her bank - I deposited over the counter, there may be a chance I kept hold of the receipt.
I have had contact from her via email and text, so yes there is proof and admission about the money being lent.0
