All maps wiped when trying to update TomTom One

I've had my TomTom one for ages and thought I should finally try to update the maps as there's quite a lot of roads that don't even exist on it etc. I'd lost the box with lead & activation code, so I bought a new lead & downloaded the TomTom home software from the website. When I plugged it in & clicked on update, I just got this error message, saying that an error had occurred; HOME cannot connect to the TomTom server (server refused connection)
I thought that was a bit annoying, but not the end of the world - I can still use it right... Or so I thought - the next time I went to switch it on,I realised all the data had been wiped from it! It just said "no maps found" when I switched it on, and it wouldn't turn off either until I took the memory card out of it!
Not sure what to do now, I've got the receipt, so I can prove that I've bought it, but it was back in 2007, so it's way out of warranty...
The actual error log from when I plugged it in, if it means something to anyone:
ERROR: 2152398861/#https://home.tomtom.com/redir/services: Error from server: HOME cannot connect to the TomTom server (server refused connection).

this.cancelException = NetUtil.exceptionForStatusCode(this.request.channel.status, this.url.spec);
2. chrome://tthome/content/logic/comm.js:278
this.request.onerror = function() { me._done(false); }

Would be SO grateful if anyone can help me out!

ive had a tomtom without the memory card (internal memory) and that happened to me too, though i managed to sync the maps again from the tomtom software.
if the software refuses to resync just contact tomtom, its their software thats caused the issue, therfore they should replace it/repair it. as long as youve not done anything "questionable" to it.0 -

Well I hope I haven't done anything wrong, but the lead I got off Amazon is definitely not an "official" one, cus it only cost a couple of quid - could this have caused the problem?bob_man_uk wrote: »ive had a tomtom without the memory card (internal memory) and that happened to me too, though i managed to sync the maps again from the tomtom software.

unlikely, ive used usb cables from various digital cameras lol.
by questionable i mean trying to hack the software to allow other unauthorised maps, if you havent then i wouldnt worry.0 -
Definitely not done any of that - far too complicated lol!bob_man_uk wrote: »unlikely, ive used usb cables from various digital cameras lol.

This happened to me once upon a time. Do you have a card reader that takes SD cards (quite often they're built into computers now or you may have a separate one that you use for a camera memory card)?
If so, take the SD card out the Tomtom and put it into the card reader. Navigate using "my computer" to the SD card and try and open it. If data is there, it will show a folder containing lots of files and the problem is likely with the Tomtom itself. The tomtom has a reset button so try that.
If there is corrupt data on the card, I'm sure that if you right click on the icon for the SD card, there is an option to repair / restore the card. This is what I did and it fixed the card.
If you can't find any data on the card or don't have a card reader try the following:
Have you ever plugged the Tomtom into the computer before (even if a long time ago)? If so, it should have made a backup of the maps. In which case you can just copy the map files directly onto the SD Card, like moving files in Windows.
Locate the folder with all the TomTom data on (should be on your computer somewhere - maybe in programme files) and copy that entire folder and it's contents to the SD Card (plug tomtom into your computer with the lead, turn on and then use it as you would an external drive by going to my computer and then E: or F: or whatever it has become. Alternatively, if you have a card reader built into your computer.0 -
I've heard of this happening in the past. It's got nothing to do with the cable you bought - it would either work or not work. But don't mention it to TomTom support, as they may cite that as a reason to wash their hands of the problem.
Otherwise they should be sympathetic and sort the problem out.
I would imagine your maps are still on the SD card, but you may need to copy the old software back, which will need TomTom's help.
The POCKETGPSWORLD.COM website also has some great TomTom experts on there as mentioned - Just find the forum for TomTom and post there your problem.Of course, I may just be talking b****cks!0 -
happened to me a few months ago. As I required the gps for my job I ended up borrowing a friends tomtom (different series), copying the data from that onto mine, reconnecting mine to tthome and then it re-downloaded the maps, and i copied back my POIs.
not a fun experience as it 'broke' at about 8:30pm, and I was leaving for work @ 4:30 am ...PANIC!!!Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
It normally prompts you to back up your existing install before downloading new maps or updates-did you not make a back up?No free lunch, and no free laptop
