Using mobile internet allowance on a laptop?

I guess my first question is whether it is possible? And the second is how do you do it?
I'm guessing it is possible as I read on a couple of the mobile companies' t&c's that their internet allowance can't be used for this purpose.
Do you hook the phone up to the laptop? Or insert the sim into a device like a dongle? And how would they know that you were using it this way?

You can link the phone to the laptop with BT or a cable (depends on which phone).
But watch out, you'll burn through data much faster that you would on the phone. You may very well fall foul of the networks fair use policy. . .0 -
