Your statutory rights are (as previously stated) that if the product is faulty, not fit for purpose or not as described you can, within 28 days claim a refund. You returned your dress because you didn't like it. You didn't have a receipt, so as far as Mr T is concerned, you could have bought it that day , 6 weeks before whenever. At least they offered you something, by rights you weren't entitled to anything. SOGA does not cover the buyer changing their mind.
Just as an additional note, i cant remember the SOGA stating 28 days anywhere. Might be store policy but your statutory rights simply state within a "reasonable" time without defining what is reasonable.
To the OP.......regardless whether you had the receipt or not they dont have to offer a refund, exchange etc. Even if the item was faulty, they can still insist on proof of purchase (although this doesnt necessarily have to be a receipt and can be a bank/card statement).
If you got the receipt from your mum, then they would have proof of when you bought it and - more importantly - the price you paid. Without a receipt they dont know what price was paid for it or even (no i'm not implying you/your mum are shoplifters, just saying that it probably does happen) that it was bought at all.
I'm not 100% sure but i think there was a thread on these forums not long ago (few months max) that Asda/Tesco/etc have changed their policy that they wont even offer a exchange/refund without a receipt. I only vaguely remember skimming over the post, hence why i'm not 100% sureYou keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -

You didn't buy it, your mum did, and I expect she had warnings about the rules when she bought the garment. There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.0
