Scandalous Tesco!

Hi, I went to Tesco this evening to take back a dress my mom had bought me as a gift - and i just wanted to exchange it instead of upsetting my mom, asking for the receipt and telling her i did'nt like it.
I was prepared to take a lower price if the item had been in sale and to only exchange it for something else. But the sales assistant told me that she haad to take a further 20% off the amount due to recent 20% sales.
My annoyance is that their was no notice of this by the tills!
I queried with CS who said they'd been told by management - this was store policy. But i'm still annoyed that they can just decide to take off 20% without any official notice
Does anyone know if they can just 'decide' something like this or do they need to advertise it in store???
Thanks in advance x

you didnt have a receipt
so may have bought it at the 20% lower price
so returning it you would have made a 20% gain0 -
normal practice at most storesEx forum ambassador

No receipt, i understand that i should have had it at a lower price but my annoyance was that she was just taking the 20% off as i didn't have the receipt but i believe their should have been something up saying '20% will be deducted if no receipt'.
It seemed to me that the store had just decided to impliment this - and i believe that these sorts of things should be official - especially for a company of that size!
Hope this makes sense!:j No regrets & lots of Smiles!!! :j0 -
By right they dont even have to give you your money back unless its not fit for purpose etc SOGA0

Not sure why this is scandalous as legally they didn't have to except it back at all. You have no rights to exchange something just because you don't like it. Any exchanges are due to the goodwill of the company. The fact that you didn't have a receipt either they did you a favour.0

Thanks for the advice, i did not realise that without a receipt i had no rights!:j No regrets & lots of Smiles!!! :j0

Your statutory rights are (as previously stated) that if the product is faulty, not fit for purpose or not as described you can, within 28 days claim a refund. You returned your dress because you didn't like it. You didn't have a receipt, so as far as Mr T is concerned, you could have bought it that day , 6 weeks before whenever. At least they offered you something, by rights you weren't entitled to anything. SOGA does not cover the buyer changing their mind.Nuts oh Hazelnuts:rotfl:0

Sounds harsh doesn't it?
If you had a receipt, they would've probably exchanged it at the value on the receipt. But without a receipt they did not know whether you had bought it at 20% off.0 -
