Too firm Memory Foam mattress - any way to make it softer?

Hi,
Ive bought a Healthopaedic Total Comfort 1500 6 months ago.
Ive been finding it too firm even in the summer, when higher temperatures should make it a bit softer. I bought sprung bedslats - no improvement.

If I bought a memory foam topper would that not take away the effect of the original memory foam layer as my body heat would hardly reach it?

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

On the manufacturers brochure it says that the mattress is medium. However I have seen it described on other web sites as medium to firm. What did you think you were buying when you placed your order?

What type of mattress protector do you use on the mattress?

A sprung divan base may help instead of the sprung slats, but it would mean getting rid of your bed frame.

Lets be far most companies say a mattress is medium to firm. As hardly anyone would sell a mattress if it said soft as we have all been brought up on the idea that a firm bed is good for your back.(hmmm thats why we all sleep on the floor) Ahem.

  • When I bought it I thought exactly that, medium to firm; I tried a similar mattress at a warehouse and then bought it over the internet. I dont use any mattress protector, would that make a difference you think?

I think before I buy another base, Ill buy another mattress...

Any thoughts on the topper issue?
    Thanks
  • If it came with a washable cover try it without - it does make a difference, honest!

Some people use mattress protectors that are very thick. Memory foam needs your body heat to react with it and soften it up.

If you were to use a memory foam topper, then all that would happen is you would sink deeper into it, which could make you very hot. It would be the springs in the mattress that are too firm.

As Pinkypants says, a sprung base would be the only solution with your existing mattress.

By the way I would always recommend using a mattress protector (only a thin one with memory foam), as it is far cheaper and easier to wash a mattress protector that it is to try and clean a mattress that has had a cup of coffee spilled on it.
  • Thanks everyone,
will see if I can find a cheap new base,
although I dont quite understand why
there is a big difference between sprung
    slats and a sprung base?

What sort of base are you using at the moment?

A sprung base will give/be softer then sprung slats are.

Agreed. But if she is already using sprung slats, then a sprung divan base won't make a huge difference. Don't you agree?

She is using sprung slats it's in 1st post and she said it didn't make any difference. A sprung base will make a difference how much though is the question.
