.....iirc any garage with a mot tester has to be open for anybody to go in and get a test.......

Doesn't sound very likely to me that any business would not be able to choose who they deal with and be able offer a service like MOT to anyone they please (or not).

Our local council one has just had an advert in the local paper and that certainly reads like they have only just started letting the public get tests.

OP...are you going to do an appeal to VOSA?

Any fail points should be clearly marked with chalk, Or is that just my MOT guys?

Draw a ring around any rust, And mark any suspension points with play etc. They should easily see any failure
points if taking it to another test centre.

Or they've just realised that, as funds are low, they need to be a bit more proactive in raising some much needed cash.

Well they have to allow anyone to use it. That's part of their contract with VOSA.

Well after listening to all the advice the Celica is booked in for a blind MOT at a classic car garage who are used to Celica's and there reinforced sills. I was lucky they had a space available this week. Will update on the findings tomorow evening for those who are interested.

As stated before we did not expect the car to pass at that age but it is certainly no rust bucket, very well looked after hence partly why it is still on the road after 19 years. Thanks for all replies.

I should also say if there are large discrepencies between the MOT's then I will contact VOSA, I will wait for the outcome but for our own peice of mind this is the best course of action. I still remember the VOSA inspector who was watching it being tested last year and who was amazed at how good it was.

  • Quck update, just had the Celica MOT'D at a classic car garage, they did a very thorough blind MOT. Car has only failed on
    1 wheel bearing
    1 New Tyre
and 2 very small patches of welding required on sill.
Total cost £200 plus a new tyre.

A huge difference from the MOT on Saturday which was 2 pages of corrosion problems and suspension mountings failure ect:eek:

After the MOT they looked at the Saturday fail sheet, did not concur then looked at the car again and could still not find all these failures. It obviously pays to go to a good garage who knows about classic cars and does not assume anything over a certain age is a rust bucket! Maybe had to spend £39.00 on this blind MOT but I think money well spent.

so it has got rust that failed the MOT,and it has got a worn wheel bearing that failed the MOT

the other original fail points are that MOT testers opinion
as opposed to the new testers opinion

so the first tester was right about the sills needing welding then?

my oh is an MOT inspector and he doesn't have vendettas against older cars, in fact its what we drive around in mainly, he does however have to stick to the VOSA testers manual. he doesn't however like the idea of dangerous cars on the road and if you saw some of the things he's tested and failed you would be very grateful to him.

they do no repairs where he is, only MOTs so there is no impetus to fail things to make work

as op said it was the welding of the sills not the sill themselfs.

at least you had a second opinion and know was there an advisory also or is that it bearing tyre and spot of weld?
