Thanks

I had to install service pack 2 from the upgrade menu which is why I've been away so long  I'm sure I've installed that before though!
Checked and it looks like Vista is managing the wireless connection0 -

This is all I have under the optional updates - do you think I need either of them?
Update for Windows Vista - English (KB937286)
Install this update to copy a local version of key help topics available in the “Online Help” feature of Windows Vista. Customers who enable the Online Help feature of the Windows Vista help system and have a persistent Internet connection do not need this update. This update is useful for customers who are frequently disconnected. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

Update type: Optional

no , does not look like either of those
lets try a different look at the problem
does the wireless connection stay up if you are next to the router ??
do you have any other wireless items running , burglar alarms etc in the house
what distance roughly would you say between the location of the router upstairs and where you sit downstairs ??
modern house with plasterboard walls or old house with thick walls ??Ex forum ambassador

Morning!
I haven't tried being next to the router
The house is from mid 1800s and has 24" thick stone walls but I'm in the living room one floor below the bedroom and in fact exactly under the router. I have high ceilings but it's definitely no more than 12' away. I have no other wireless items running either.
Other thing to say is that this set up has been running perfectly for the past year with this laptop and probably for 3 years previously with other laptops so it would be strange if it was suddenly causing a problem now
