I have been told that passat turbos are very prone to failure. I would not buy a VW again! Still need to get this one sorted though because I can't afford another £600 again.

sounds like the bearings have seized could be a faulty unit but most probably oil starvation, ebays not always the best place to buy as it can be hard when things go wrong

Is it ususally oil starvation that is the problem?
I know thats what the supplier on e-bay is saying.

The shaft is still free to turn though surely it would have siezed if there was an oil supply problem.

99/100 oil starvation is the problem

To me it sounds like the nut on the turbine shaft was overtorqued when the unit was being reassembled. Even if the turbine stopped dead from full speed I can't see there being enough rotational energy stored in the nut to shear it off the end of the shaft.

A decent seller would take it back to have a look at it first.
I would never trust anyone that can make a diagnosis over the phone/internet.
Raise a paypal dispute, return it by special delivery, paypal will refund your money normally.
I don't buy parts like this from ebay shops, I buy over the counter with a face to face service for this very reason.

Oil starvation will show overheating and burning, as well as damaged/seized bearings normally. Poor assembly such as over-torquing won't.
  • Sounds like they are a buisiness

Had a similar problem, mentioning trading standards seemed to focus the mind

Things that seize due to lack of oil do so because they overheat and often free off again when they cool down. But the damage is done
