Defective Turbo for VW Passat bought on E-bay
Hi All,
About two weeks ago the turbo blew on my VW Passat. I ordered a re-manufactured one from Global Auto parts based in Birmingham.(on e-bay)
24 Hours after fitting this new turbo has also blown on me. The part is defective and not fit for purpose but the seller will not accept this. I have a car that is not much use to me, my fitter is claiming a defective part and the seller of the turbo is blaming the fitter.
Any advise on what I should do?

Make a claim on eBay, they usually favour the buyer in disputes.

Did you pay via paypal?0

I have just submitted a dispute on e-bay but I'm not too hopeful.
I paid using paypal0 -
Oil feed to the turbo connected? not blocked etc?...0

If you paid via paypal the chances are ebay will resolve the dispute in your favour provided you list all the relevant factors when raising the dispute.0

did you change the oil pipes?
As others have said you are pretty likely to win this on ebay/paypal unless the seller gets it back and alleges foreign object damage or oil starvation.0 -
whoever fitted the turbo should really of checked it before fitting it. It's very possible to check the turbos seals and check for play in the wheel...
I think you'll have a hard time with this one, personally.0 -
There's a reason the first one failed, and blocked oilways through neglected (or mis-named 'long life') servicing would be a possibility.
You'll find out when you fit the next one.0 -
I still have both the original turbo that came off the car and the damaged "new one" still on the car.
My fitter has looked at the new one and said that the nut on the air intake side of the turbine has sheared off and damaged the fins.
The turbo supplier has claimed that this would indicate an oil problem and that the shaft must have siezed to the bearing.
I know that this cannot be true because the shaft on the new one is still free to spin.
The oil was changed, new oil filter and new air filter. The oil feed pipe was removed and cleaned out.
Still £600 out of pocket with my car in the same state as before and will have to pay to get another replacement fitted.0 -
The garage should be able to tell why the turbo failed by looking at it and so will the supplier.Chances are its overheating through oil starvation or poorly balanced.Rebuilt turbos supposedly don't last as long as new ones but 1 day is ridiculous.
Whatever, make sure its sorted properly next time or you risk a lot more than the cost of the turbo, it can totally wreck your engine and cause £thousands of damage if bits of broken turbo go through it.0
