    If you pulled the power so suddenly on your PC on a regular basis, it would die as well!

    Does this mean the only safe removal is after the machine has shut down? Would this include while in Windows hibernation?

    Well I managed to take it apart and keep it in one piece, that's where the good news ends. Its had it. Windows doesn't recognise it at all. If windows can't see it there's no chance getting the files back.
