Thanks Book_lover!

Just as I was getting excited about possibly being in the wrong band......
I must have been looking at English bands

book_lover wrote:sans, I will also be interested in replies to your post. I am terrified that my inquiries may lead to a friend who lives possibly half a mile away (but we are rural) being upgraded to F. She is on the same band as us but has a much larger home now due to a big extension.... maybe they haven't caught up with her yet, or maybe we should be on the band lower.... actually I will phone her.
Usually the house is rebanded when it is sold after extensions etc. The new buyers would pay the higher banding rate. Not your friend.
If your house was the same as hers before her extension seems you should both be on the same banding.
Check other houses nearby see what banding they're on.

This is geting a lot of publicity today but no-one seems to be asking the obvious question... where are all these rebates coming from?
Local government needs funding and councils set council tax according to how much they need to spend, so if they have to start giving 'millions' back to people who have checked their banding it's my guess those 'millions' will need to be recouped from next years bills. That will be spread over everyones bill so we will all pay more.
The vast majority of people are in the right band, so for the most of us Martin has cost us money!0 -

So if you were in the wrong band, and paying more than you should, would you just accept it and carry on paying the higher rate, and forget about the money that the council had made from you?0 -
My point is your rebate is not as large as you think because you will incur the cost of the mass rebates next year. The councils costs wont change (except their admin costs may go up, but we'll pay for that aswell).0

Yes those who have been overcharged should appeal and get a rebate and I think compensation (or interest) too. Any increase in costs next year will be divided more fairly amongst all council tax payers not just the wrongly banded who are supporting council tax by paying too much.
Those who are now being overcharged should not bear the brunt of too high council tax any longer.

May I just check?
I have been renting in a few houses over the past 9 years and have been paying C Tax.
Am I able to look into this also or do you need to be a home owner?
Thanks,

Good!!!
It's about time we had a revolt about the unfairness and anomalies of council tax.
Why should some people pay more than others for the same kind of house?
In this area older people in small 1/2 bed bunglalows are paying the same council tax rate as large 3/4 bed houses with a garage.
Don't hear the people in the large houses offering to pay more.
