Thanks CubeGame. Do you really need a car in LA? One of my friends went there and she doesn't drive and had no problems.
    What other cities are there?

    Driving in LA??

No thank you very much !

7 or 8 lane superhighways, manic drivers, scary stuff !

Of course you can do whatever you please, but having done several multi centre trips to the USA over the years, we usually find that two places are enough and that 3 is one too many.

We also prefer NOT to drive.

Flight costs can mount up on a 3 centre stay, not to mention the waste of time that is getting to airports and hanging about in airport lounges, collecting luggage etc etc..

So, how long are you thinking of going for in total ?

Also, I am wondering if you had to choose 2 of the 3 out of LV, LA and SF which you would choose.

Have been to them all and can possibly help on that score :)

Thanks for that, we have 2 full weeks off work so perhaps 9/10 days in between that?
If we really had to choose, it would be vegas (vegas is definate) and SF. ( i think :rotfl:)
  • We've done this trip twice and for LA I would say you definitely need a car as it is very spread out. On our first morning, we decided to walk to Hollywood as it did not look far on the map. We stopped and asked someone for directions and he laughed at us! Seems it was something like a 3 hour walk! We went back and got the car.

Lol, maybe we will just look at vegas and SF then, unless there is another city that looks good.

Do you have any recs for hotels/areas to avoid/things to do for San Fran?

    OK, possibly my choices too.

Now for 9/10 days there is no way I would be considering all three, too much wasted time travelling.

Vegas = best place ever IMO, check out the sticky at the top of this page. Also, the Vegas forum on tripadvisor is amongst the most popular on there, hundreds of posts daily.

Hotels in Vegas = hold your nerve, 3-6 months before you go is when to book them as they often lower their prices when not full. Have a look at www.smartervegas.com for some unbeatable offer codes. Also remember that they will honour any price drops after you have booked. Finally, you can actually reserve more than one Vegas hotel at the same time, we often do, and then simply keep an eye out for price changes and choose the one that suits you best closer to the time. :rotfl:

SF, lovely for 4-5 days, plenty to do, we didnt hire a car at all and did our own thing. Alcatraz is a must, the Golden Gate, Fishermans Wharf, a trip on the river, the street cars, Union Square.... and the world famous BUSHMAN :D:D:D

LA has its attractions too.... Universal Studios was our fave. But there is loads there.

Get onto tripadvisor, get on the forums, some really knowledgeable folk go on there.

The 2 main areas to stay in SF are Fishermans wharf and Union Square.

    Avoid Tenderloin I think.

I agree with a couple of others. In that short time I would go with 2 places and out of the 3 I would choose SF and LV. I wouldnt go to LA without a car. SF and LV much easier to get round without a car

Vegas IMO is the best. I think you have posted already on the Vegas sticky so you have an idea about that from the Vegas lovers over on that thread

Yep, have already looked at Vegas, so we are just looking at SF now.
Just need to pick the hotel in Vegas and then SF. Flights aren't out just yet. I think its LGW-LV, LV-SF, SF-LGW.

I would do San Diego rather than LA I just had 5 days there and walked to most points of interest.

You really dont need to pick a hotel in Vegas until a couple of months/weeks ahead.

Assomeone else said if you book direct with no cancellation charges you can book as many as you like and keep changing for the right deal.

I often have a few hotels booked for vegas right up until just before I leave the UK
