Bamboozled by iphone unlocking

Hiya
I have now been offered an iphone, a third generation one, I have a really good Orange contract so want to keep my sim & the iphone is on another network (possibly O2) so I need to get it unlocked.

I went to a phone unlocking place today who told me that he could 'temporarily' unlock it for £15, but when the phone updates it will reset and everything will be lost, or for £40 I can have it permanantly unlocked. I am getting the phone from a friend of mine so I am getting it for a good price, so don't mind spending £40 if that will do the trick, but does this sound right to people? The phone has been sitting in a drawer in her house for about 6 months so I don't think calling the service provider to get it unlocked is an option, technology throws me completely so if anyone knows the answer i'd REALLY appreciate it! :)

The temporary unlock is if the phone is jailbroken. He's right if u update the firmware thru itunes the phone will get locked. The permanant unlock will cost u around £20 from o2 if on PAYG and free on contract.
  • The problem is she hasn't used the phone in months & I'm not sure if she even has the contract anymore (she is also not the most proactive person, so I could be waiting months for her to actually phone them!) Maybe I will try popping into a shop tomorrow and see if I can find out anything further. Thanks for your help.

If you have no luck with your friend, get any O2 PAYG simcard.. top it up by £15.00 and then you can get it unlocked online here:

As said here, if it's on O2 put £15 on a PAYG sim card and O2 will unlock it permanently for this amount and it will still be legal - what the shop are doing is jail breaking it.
The only way of legitimately unlocking it is getting its IMEI number onto apple's unlocked database.
You then need to restore it on iTunes when they text you to say it's unlocked.
