Make sure it isn't as simple as a dirty CD drive.

Open the Device Manager, double click on 'DVD/CD-ROM Drives' and then double click on your drive. From there you can update, uninstall and reinstall Drivers and check that the device is 'working properly'.

If after you have tried these different combinations, there is still no go; you can then try to update the Firmware

checked the device manager, i have clicked the "check for solutions" button and it says " could not load driver software"

and then what? The things you have stated are unconnected.

i went into the device manager, and it lists the cd/dvd rom details, underneath is a box that contains the following message, This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.
i clicked the check for soloutions button and anothe box appears that says could not load driver software.

i have yes, i have an acer laptop not sure of the model and i'm using vista.
