I thought thay costco only had 6 month warranty on computer goods which then reverted back to manjf. warranty??
    Keep smiling, G.
  • Costco don't have a warranty as such, they just refund if there is a fault. They are usually very flexible and will often refund on items which are two or three years old.

This is a reasonable price for a laptop with the specifications listed by Costco but it can be difficult to judge when the specifications can vary so dramatically with different processors, hard drives, graphics cards, etc. This model P100-423 is not available anywhere else, including Toshiba's own web site, making it very difficult to judge value.

I think the spec will be very similar to this model at Dixons which might give some idea of value.

(Full spec of P100-227 on Tosh site here )

Laptopsdirect do a P100 model but with dedicated graphics here which might also give a guide to value.

As regards warranty I think I've seen a special notice up in Costco relating to computer equipment warranty which makes me think it's different to other electricals. Have to give it a read next time I go.

I think you are right onzey, I remember asking about this - seems the public were abusing their excellent returns policy and just returning pc's, laptops etc after 18 months - 2 years, no questions asked, for a newer model. So now they operate the no questions asked policy for 6 months and then it's the manufacturer's warranty. I think this is still generous as I's be suprised if you got money back in somewhere like Comet or Currys afte 5months and 29 days.

  • Yes they have a different policy for laptops and, I believe, LCD screens and there is a notice about it. How rigid they are on that though I don't know as they are generally very flexible. I also believe the 6 months is for return 'no questions asked'. If the laptop was faulty they would probably still just give a refund as I have never known them to send anything for repair.

The biggest problem with laptops and LCD screens is dead or stuck on pixels. Who else would accept a return within 6 months for that?

The 227 has the T2300E 1.66gHZ Processor, a 667Mhz FSB and a 80Gb Hard Drive which is somewhat different to the Costco model, but is about the only indication there is for value. The Costco model has a slightly faster processor, slightly slower FSB and a bigger Hard Drive. So at £705 with a case and an excellent returns policy it does appear to be good value.

Seem to be some more P100 models on Tosh site now. (I'm sure there were a lot less the other day).

    Still no P100-423

There's a Toshiba model at savastore with 3 year warranty (and can pay in 2007 interest free) which doesn't look bad.

    Also this FS Amilo here

Edit: The Tosh link in this post goes to the eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com site as opposed to uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com and shows more models.

Talking of Costco .. in my new job i have the chance of joining for a £25 a year fee. My nearest one is about 35 miles away so i am not sure it would be worth my while. Do they have very good deals ?

You get a 2nd card free, so if you get a mate to go 50/50 with you it might be worth it. The good thing about Costco is if you are not happy or its faulty they will give you your money back. Tyres are cheap and if you go for there kormaran tyres if they have them for your car?,they are a good buy. I just bought a washing machine from them £311.00 with a 3 year warranty about £450 anywhere else. The day pass will only allow you to look around, you cann't buy anything. If you join and thenk forget your pass, they will give you a day pass which you can buy with. I would have a look before you join though.
  • I have been in to Costco this afternoon and was interested to see they had the Toshiba P100-227 for the same price as they are offering the P100-423 in their discount booklet - that is £704.98 inc. VAT. Toshiba have replied to me and still have no knowledge of a P100-423! The 227 has a lower spec. to the 423 (as Costco show it), but they are close.

The Fujitsu Siemens on nice-pc.com looks good until you look at the cost of a warranty for it! The Savastore Toshiba A100 is a little short on spec on its Hard Drive and memory.
