Just a quick update...I rang up the Techguys today to be given by write off code and was advised that I didn't need one and had been advised incorrectly when I spoke to them last week.

According to the very helpful advisor I spoke to today, I can just go straight into the Currys store with ID and proof of the laptop collection by DPD and then Currys will be able to issue me a replacement. He also advised to stand firm and remind them off their own Terms and Conditions and any problems just contact techguys whilst in store.

This sounded too easy to me so I contacted Currys customer service who advised me that this is the case and will probably be necessary for Currys to validate my claim by speaking to the Techguys whilst I am there but otherwise no problems.

Hopefully what I have been told is right and so am going to go Currys tonight to collect my replacement laptop...fingers crossed.

Also just out of curiosity, where do I stand if I cannot find a suitable replacement? Am I able to ask for a refund?

And also is there any chance they would let me choose my replacement from pc world (next-door) as a greater choice since this is a sister company of currys.

Why not just go to pc world in the first place, its what i did.

As for demanding a refund, you can ask but they are not required to if the refund is "disproportionately costly" to a replacement, which it probably is.

They could also offer you a partial refund which may leave you less money than required.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

Went into currys/pc world tonight and was allowed to look in both however there is nothing of a similar spec in store...must have got a really good deal last year. So only offer were anything for same value, or lower and then store credit for the difference as bought with a finance account. Apparently they won't credit your finance account with the difference.

So upto me to decide whether I get a worse laptop and then spend money in currys on unnecessary items...or accept the repaired motherboard and the 3 month warranty on the repair and hope for no issues...

If it was bought on finance, it is incredibly awkward to refund after so long (and I wouldn't trust that you'd be back in the original state).

How much did you get, and what was the original laptop?

It were 599 when I bought it. It were an acer aspire 7736g. Really good little laptop. Think my best option would be to take a lower spec laptop at a lower price of 499 and then use my store credit on the remaining 100.

It were bought on a buy now pay in 12 months so only paid a 10% deposit so far and due to pay next month the rest.

There have been a few different 7736gs made (and I'm at home now, so I can't check which ones we sold)!

If the 17" screen isn't essential (and I made that mistake buying mine - could have got so much more choice with a 15"!), this one: http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/sony-vaio-vpcee2s1e-bq-06559695-pdt.html is really nice, and if I had the money to replace my laptop, I'd go for that. Only downside is a relatively short battery life.

    If it's a 17" you're after, maybe this: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/hp-pavilion-dv7-4020sa-06474287-pdt.html

Also, check back at the weekend, because I think they're planning a couple more offers.

    Thanks for all your help.

Got it all sorted yesterday. In the end made the decision that I wasnt really using the full spec on my old laptop and so was probably best to downgrade slightly and then use the rest as store credit.

Worked out well as my Mum wanted to buy my little brother a Wii for christmas and so was able to but a bit to the remaining credit and get this and then she can just give me the cash. In the end went for the Acer 5531 and so far i'm impressed.

Cannot fault the service I have received at either Currys or PC world.

Originally went into Currys and the manager who served me was very helpful and once had confirmed with the Techguys that I was entitled to a replacement let me look. When I saw nothing that I liked he sent me next door to PC world to have a look.

I went back the next day to PC world and chose the laptop. The sales guy spent ages with us and in the end we had to go back next door to Currys to purchase the laptop and he stayed with us until it was sorted. Then in Currys the woman who served me did her best to ensure that I received the best package available re. the Wii.

Overall the Techguys did exactly what they said they would do and when and the service I received from Currys and Pc world was very good. Especially as not really their fault that the laptop had stopped working.

    Thanks for all your help.:j
