this is either the water thread or the fuel thread as I cant make my mind up.
I had a thought last night about how to use my bath water and want to put it you. At the moment my gas heated water is only on for a couple of hours a day which seems to be adequate. say that the timer switch heats the water until 8pm. At this point the tank should still be full of hot water? so if i choose to have a bath would it be best to have it at this time so effectively when the tank is refilled its not heated until the water is switched on again? as a contrast if I have a bath at say 6 pm when the water is still switched on will it use up valuable gas heating a water tank that wont be used?

In theory you are correct that it would be better to take your bath at the point when the heating switches off.(8pm in your case)
However you would need to use all the hot water for this to be most cost effective as you wouldn't have a tank of hot water losing heat; but would have no hot water for washing up etc.
In practice, with a well insulated tank, the losses will not be high and the cost impact will be small.0
