    The above entry shows that you have a rather nasty Look2Me adware infection.

    ====

    Can you please submit a file for analysis by CLICKING HERE. No registration required, just follow the instructions in the sticky topic at the top of the forum.

    Please submit the file:

    C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\ffum\ffumm.exe

    The sample will be forwarded to various anti-malware companies.

    =====

    Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

    http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

    Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

    If you receive an error (while running Option #1), similar to this:
    "C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
    C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."

    ...then please use Option #5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition.
    Do NOT run the fix portion without repairing this first.

    ====

    Can I also ask you to unzip HijackThis to it's own folder please. You are running it directly out of the zip at the moment where the backups will be saved in an unsafe temp folder.

    When you've done that, right-click HijackThis.exe and rename it to HJT.exe.

    Then post a fresh HijackThis log in addition to the L2MeFix log please. :)

    May I just say that Windows Messenger service is turned off by default after SP1a and SP2 so it shouldnt even be a consideration as the OP has SP2.

    I'm sure that's what the documentation says, but in the real world it never pays to ignore the possibility that, for some reason, the Service either didn't become disabled or has been re-enabled, either by some person or other software. After all, if SP2 can turn it off then a virus or whatever can turn it back on again.

    There has never been an issue of this kind after SP1a and SP2

    You are really saying that, post SP1a and SP2:

    1) No computer has ever had Windows Messaging Service turned on by software not purposely run by the user

    and

    2) No computer has ever had its Windows Messaging Service turned on by a person other than the main user?

    I beg to differ.
  • Maybe you'd both like to continue your difference of opinion via pm's so we don't detract from the issue in hand which certainly has nothing to do with the Windows Messenger Service. ;)
