Which underlay to choose?

Hi,

We're about to order a new carpet for our main bedroom and dressing room. We want it to be as luxurious as possible so knew we wanted to go for a good underlay - which is what the shop has quoted us for.

However we've realised, we don't know the first thing about what actually constitutes a 'good' underlay. What should we be looking for? Someone recommended a product to my husband and said it was far better than 'normal' underlays :

http://www.tradepriced.co.uk/cloud_9_carpet_underlay.html

No idea if this is true though or what factors we should be looking for. Are there any carpet fitters out there that can shed any light?

Thank you!

Highly recommend Cloud 9's 9mm underlay. Perfect depth, lovely luxurious and very comfy. 11mm is too much IMO.

    Great prices from Tradepriced too

I went for the 11mm Cloud 9 from Tradepriced. The gripper rods they sell on that site are designed for the 11mm underlay and our fitters had no problem at all fitting our carpets, even on our stairs. I read on a DIY forum before I purchased a post from a carpet fitter who says he does it all the time, and if your carpet fitter moans about 11mm and gripper rods, get another one in.

We had our carpets done several months ago, and no problems.

IMHO, if you want luxury, go 11mm.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like this Cloud9 product is a good one so will probably go for that. Thank you for all your advice.

Not sure on depth yet, need to decide between 9mm and 11mm

Can anyone comment please about the 10-11mm underlay (C9 or Treadair)?
Will this PU underlay thickness will go over bog standard wood grippers or do I need to buy new special ones. The existing grippers are 5 years old.
I am asking as we need to fit carpets all around our new house and the existing grippers are nailed to the floor and looks ok as we only removed the old carpets last month. It will save me a heck of a long time, money and scratched fingers if I can use the existing gripper rods.

I did see a 14mm underlay the other day advertised, envirolay its called but can't comment on any as i have none myself at the moment.
What you don't want is to feel like your on a bouncy castle.

Also if you go thicker in one room not sure how this would work out where it meets another carpet at the door.

unfortunately our big dog peed on our carpet upstairs in the loft a few months ago.....mopped it up and shampooed it...however have since had roof leak and have had to lift the carpet up and found a rather large pee stain...my question is can i clean this? what with? or should i replace it with the carpet...underlay is cloud nine and has only been down a couple of yrs and looks ok other than the stain

Bicarbonate of soda is good for cat pee so assume same goes for dog too

It helps get rid of the ingrained smell that is so hard to remove. Also if struggling to remove any stain, we use White Wizard - although prob best to test on a hidden area first to make sure it doesn't hurt your carpet.

Just to report back on my OP, we went for 11mm Cloud Nine in the end, and it is great. Really love it, it feels so soft underfoot, just how we wanted it.

Need to get the hall done soon and will be going for the same underlay.
