When I first started mountain walking a long time ago, I was told that a pair of boots should be good for 5 mountain climbs, you have to think about replacing them after that.
Not sure if that's true now thanks to vibram soles..

    Berghaus are great.

Vote with your feet and buy a different brand from a different shop.

    Buy some Merrells like these:

Mine are nearly 8 years old, still as solid as they ever were and I've trekked them all over the globe and generally given them a massive thrashing. Still entirely in one piece, still wonderfully comfy. Awesome.

I have three pairs of those :o

I find with my boots/shoes (any make) is that the cushioning in the heel gets holes, even before there is any sign of wear on the soles.

Me too and boots end up unwearable as the solid bit at the heel buckles when I put them on. It is becoming more clear as I get old why older people use shoe horns - to keep the heel of the boot upright!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions- I confess I did NOT give them love and attention every day (the dogs get that!) but they were polished from time to time....
My real gripe was the answer given by the shop; obviously there is walking and there is dog walking and no disclaimer in the shop to point the differences out or that their boots were not suitable! The Merrells look good as well as the thought of decathlon trainers.

Talking about answers given by shops....not walking boots but shoes bought from M&S £49.99 Mens for DS2 for school. After 1 week they need to be re-heeled. When I took them back to M&S to complain the sales assistant said.....'Wear and tear'. I wanted to swear but instead said if it was wear and tear after one week then the product was not fit for purpose!

My son was happy with the style and fit and 15yr olds are awkward so all I wanted was M&S to pay for them to be re- heeled.
Despite me saying this from the of, SA suggested they were replaced incase there was a quality issue. I told her that I was not a product tester and these tests should have been done prior to going on the sales floor!
Eventually a manager agreed to pay for the re-heeling!
