Perhaps you could go for a cheaper option of asking for a bulkhead or emergency exit seat? (prob Bulkhead if your wife has a medical problem) Then she could sort of stretch out slightly, at least in a better pitch than the other economy seats
I chose our seats online when we booked and used seatguru to get the best seats we could.
The ones on the 777 flights are a set of the twin seats at the rear of the aircraft - so at least she can sit in the aisle seat and get up and down whenever she needs to without disturbing anyone.
I managed to get an exit seat on both our A380 flights, so she'll hopefully have more room to stretch out.0 -

If the aircraft isn't full, it's worth mentioning to the Cabin Crew your wife has developed a bad back and if there's a row of 3 empty she could perhaps try to lie across the 3 seats for at least part of the journey or you could move across an aisle and allow her to have the 2 seats as a makeshift bed
Not ideal but probably more cost effective!0 -
Be aware that if you highlight to the CC that your wife has a back problem they may be inclined (or forced by policy) to move you out of exit-row seats.Legal team on standby0

Thanks for all the advice.
We're hoping that she'll be recovered by the time we fly (5 weeks from today), but it's good to keep our options open to see what we might be able to do if she's still struggling.0 -

The twin seats on the 777 aren't an emergency exit, it's just the way the aircraft is so there's no harm in asking about using a spare aisle or seat for the OP's wife to stretch out on so she'd be ok, it's just the A380 flight in bound she'd have to be wary of0

The A380 seats on Emirates are very comfortable and roomy and are just about the best long haul economy class on the market. Some of their 777s are becoming dated though.
Also be aware that if you take an exit row you have to be "physically capable" in case of an emergency. If you declare any back pain you may now be allowed in the seats,
Unless you are a regular flyer on an airline the chances of an upgrade are virtually zero.0 -
