That should be ok.

How was the item originally listed? If an auction, perhaps ask if they are planning on relisting as you would be interested in making a bid if that was what they would prefer.

I've done that previously.
It was an item I really wanted, no similar live items were available and I found this item that had ended recently.
The seller responded confirming he hadn't sold it, saying he would relist as previously (it had a £10 start price anyway) and, if I agreed, would close the auction as soon as I bid. It saved the seller the BIN fees.

10 mins later it was all done and I had paid the tenner and the item was dispatched

I've made loads of after auction offers, usually when I feel that the listing price was too high to bother bidding etc. I've yet to be blocked OR refused on an offer I've made after an auction has ended. I'd say 90% have been happy to accept a Paypal purchase, the other 10% have relisted BIN on a negotiated price.

I've offered in the past, usually the seller has only been too happy to sell.

Since Paypal gives me protection on non-eBay purchases I don't really care, and since the stuff I've bought this way has often been low-value stamps I don't think I'm taking a huge risk.

I've sold one book to someone this way but it was good to get rid of it. I'm not going to turn down a sale, though I normally relist for them.

I don't see the wisdom in blocking people who have yet to prove they are a bad buyer. I think a sale is a sale.

I've had messages like that, when an item has / hasn't sold. If it has, I just apologise and tell them, but if it didn't sell, I tend to relist then on a 3day auction or something.
I've sent similar messages too, having been too late for an auction whcih has finished with no bids, to ask if they will be relisting as i missed the end. SOmetimes sellers respond and relist, sometimes they don't. I don't think it's a big deal either way, and haven't suggested either way to go "outside of ebay" as it were.
I certainly wouldn't block anyone who asked.

i have both sold items and bought items after the auction, but always at a buy it now, to cover myself.
