Filter and modem are two different things

A filter needs to be fitted to any socket that a phone is plugged into.

but you cant plug your modem into a filter on an extension cord that has been filtered at the master socket

just plug your modem into any phone socket that has a filter attached to it, preferably the master socket (as the signal and speed will be better there) - but your bedroom socket will work if it has been wired up correctly (ie. not like I have mentioned above)

if this socket is using some sort of extension to the master socket, then it would involve a different way of wiring the filters
  • My computer is used from the extension socket but I also have a filter on the main socket as well.

I am just confused as the title says filters but the question is about the modem

Part of TalkTalk's troubleshooting is to try & get you to plug the modem straight into the master socket (the one where, if you remove the lower cover, there's a socket underneath). This can be a pain if your PC is (as usual) not in the hall, main room etc. Has the broadband worked at all in the 6 months or are you still trying to get it set up?

by extension cord, i am refering to pluging in a lead into the front of, fr example, the master telephone socket as you would a phone

if the extension socket is connected to the master socket via wiring inside of the master socket - then a filter here will not matter - since the broadband single is being 'redirected' down the extension socket as well

just imagine the filter as a brick wall with a hole in it... the hole is on the side of where you connect the adsl (broadband) modem to - the other (the normal telephone socket) is bricked up.... broadband cannot go via the bricked up side, as the filter splits the broadband and telephone signals up, likewise - you cannot use a phone on the broadband side of the filter

so if we continue the example... you wouldn't be able to get broadband down an extension cable plugged into the front of a master socket that has already been bricked up - broadband needs a clear unbricked hole to work
now if you get an extension box (the thing that allows you to plug a combination of 2 or 3 phones/faxes/sky boxes, etc into one socket) - into the main socket, and place a filter in one of these extensions - you can plug your main phone into the master socket.... then by another one of the extensions in the extension box, you can plug in the extension cable going to the study etc, then place a filter onto that end - and everything will work properly (though you will have some signal loss in the extension).

but as i said before... if the extension is 'hot wired' to the master socket (as inside the actual box) - then you will not need to worry about extenion cables going to the master socket

it may be easier to show with a diagram... maybe i'll try and do one later, and maybe we could make it a sticky post....
