reading a water meter

I have always been on a meter and when the latest one came it was an estimated one so thought I would see what the actual reading is like. Lifted the cover and it was full of ants nest which i cleared but the little glass bit with reading on seems to be all scratched and appears impossbile to read-(its about 19 yrs old) i poured water over it, shone a torch on it, but still the numbers elude me. any others had this problem?

I'd ask for it to be repaired. They are always on about checking for leaks and you can't do that if you can't read it.

    Which company is it ?
I ask because some do a 10 year old meter replacement scheme anyway so you could ask for it to be replaced under that anyway or you can call them and say you are unable to read the meter so could someone make an appointment with you and read it ..That way they can see the problem and request it be replaced at their end.

It's not got one of those little windscreen wipers on it has it. I went for years not being able to read mine because of condensation until I asked the meter reader how he read it.

OK..Severn Trent do replace meters that are 10 years old as standard when asked as it is to much trouble for them otherwise.

What you need to do is call them and ask for a "meter exchange" and that they make an appointment with you. That will then go to the back office that deals with these things and as part of DG6 they have 5 working days to get in touch with you about it.

On mine (and it is a fair years old) just above the numbers there is a bit of clear plastic shaped like an arrow or pointer. If I twiddle that it wipes the inside of the glass. My neighbour has a newer meter and it seems a different design. I'm not sure how old it is but it must be 10-20 years and had (until it broke) a blue plastic cover over the meter.

well the good news is that when I got home last night I had a new meter. Bad news of course is that my new bill was £80 more!! ah well. the new one has a little flap I just open when I need to read it.
