With the problems over the sort code, I don't think the fact it was set up after the migration necessarily means that the A&L/Santander issue isn't the reason (although if it is the reason and the direct debit has actually bounced rather than been paid, I would have expected it to be showing at the Post Office credit card end by now and for them to be aware of it, so this may be a red herring).

An update.

The post office direct debit was returned as Alliance & Leicester had not set up the direct debit there end. Apparently the post office had tried 3 times to set up the direct debit and had no response from Alliance & Leicester.

Fortunately the post office refunded the £12 late fee and I was able to make a debit card payment over the phone for the full amount.

Think it is time to move current accounts.
