Can we please just clarify the rules here, we are getting more and more threads where people are being told to just refund paypal payments and tell the buyer to bring cash instead, and it worries me.

Ebay say that sellers must offer paypal, it cannot be refused for any reason (except in the motor vehicle categories). It is not even allowed to say you would prefer cash on collection.

If a seller is doing a collection only item then paypal say their service is not appropriate so you have a Catch 22 situation and you must have a back up plan. Either accept the risks and sell collection only, or don't use ebay for these items. If you do want to use ebay then find a courier, any courier and add that postage charge to your auction but mention that collection may be possible for cash. Then if someone uses paypal the invoice picks up the courier charge as well, if they don't then they can bring cash. That is still a bit dodgy to be honest, but it is th eonly solution that stands any chance of working.

If you refund a paypal payment on a collected item then buyer can just refuse to collect and the seller is then stuck with no sale, FVFs to pay and the possibility of a neg and a non performing seller complaint.

We sellers must stay safe on ebay, and to do that we need to understand the rules.

Please don't give advice if you don't know what you are talking about!
You could get people to have their account suspended, or lose money because what you are suggesting is against eBay's rules.

Soolin is correct you must offer paypal as a form of payment except on cars , maybe a better way of putting it would be if collecting you will accept cash however if using paypal (as is theyre right to do so) then items are posted via trackable means, if theyre genuine and want to save a few £££ on postage then they'll be happy to bring along cash to collect

The only problem with saying this is if they are genuine, they will possibly take offence at being told they are a possible scammer. If someone refused my payment for this reason, then I would be pretty cross.

It's a bit of a no-win situation and best avoided but the absolute worst thing to do is to rant at your buyer and call them dishonest. I agree with Soo, finding a courier or whatever is advisable, but be as diplomatic as possible. I personally don't buy collection-only goods as I am not happy with taking loads of cash into unfamiliar places (I'm not talking a tenner for a chair, I'm talking expensive stuff like TVs here). It is dodgy from both sides, but please don't call your buyer dishonest to their face - it will only worsen relations in the long run.

Just remember though it needs to be done when you list, not once the auction has finished. So my advice was pretty useless for the oP as the listing has finished, but may help other people in future.

It isn't foolproof though but it is the best solution I've seen so far.
