We swapped to eon's age concern tarrif - despite being well under retirement age.

Some advisor at the door went through a load of tarrifs and explained that due to not being able to discriminate against non old people, you could now get the 'age' tarrif even if younger....
[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.
    [/greenhighlight][redtitle]
The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that

So unless you are over 60 Scottish Power can't help you. You aren't vunerable under 60 ;)

Well you certainly aren't as vulnerable as the deaf, blind, chronically ill with a disability and otherwise specially needy over sixty year old!

I wonder if they would qualify for DLA? :o
    Gone ... or have I?

  • Hi Kingfisherblue

I believe that you will need to meet all the necessary criteria which also includes being over 60 years old. If you do meet all the criteria then deninately give us a call to see what we can do for you.

    Kind Regards

    Colin @ ScottishPower

I'm only 41, so it doesn't look as though I will qualify after all. As others have said, being under 60 seems to mean that you are not vulnerable, despite disabilities.

I assumed that being on IS and my son having 'another type of special need' would make us eligible for the social tariff, but apparantly not. Very disappointing, especially as my son's disabilities mean that I have an excessive amount of washing, I need to use my tumble dryer as wet washing hanging around affects his breathing, and the heating has to be on for overnight spells during the cold weather, as well as during the day when he is at home.

Maybe it is time for me to consider other suppliers who do consider the disabled as vulnerable.

Many seem to do this. Both companies that my parents are with (southern electric & south west water) mention nothing about age. You just need to have a certain medical condition and receive income based benefits.

I have read somewhere in Martins stuff about social tariffs, I've had a look but have now found it
    • Consider a financial hardship tariff
If you're in financial hardship some companies offer special cheaper tariffs, which will help. However you can't assume these will be the cheapest. As you're online (or you wouldn't be reading this), it's possible the cheapest online tariff will beat many hardship tariffs.
I guess that it would mean calling your supplier & asking if they have one.

Yes - something about spending 10% or more of your income on electric. No idea if you have to be disabled or on benefits for this.

  • When an npower door knocker worked out my tariff one day and told me the most rediculous story about what npower could be I started my looking around the comparision websites. I don't want tesco points, argos discount or anything else, just the discount please.

Having been on Benefits now for 8 years, I only learned about the social tarif earlier this year. EDF changed me immediately when I phoned them. My previous supplier for 5 years they never mentioned a social tariff to me.

I have been looking around the comparisson sites and only 1 even mentions a social tariff. However I was showing up as npower and Scottish Power "online" tariffs being lower priced than the tariff I am on, wanting to find out more information I started my research. I contacted Which?Switch, spoke to their energy advice staff, for their suggestion.

I went on the Scottish Power website, and received a phone call from one of their sales team....the gentleman (! ahem) I spoke too, told me that EDF had put their tariff up that day ( actually it was announced in the news that day, starting in October) and that Scottish Power did not have a social tariff at all. But he would put me on the online tariff.

A horse thief is a horse thief in any language.....I was not believing what the Scottish Power gentleman was telling me...I can read and listen to the news.....he was a salesman.

I sent a PM to a Utilities company representitive, and to date I have heard nothing from him. I also started a thread as I read this forum day and daily and hoped some of the "Brain Boxes" on this site may know the answer to my question. To date, all has been quiet on the Western Front.

At the moment I am staying with EDF. I have been delighted with their advisors every time I have phoned them.
Today, my BEST is good enough.
