I know it's a hard thing to judge without photos etc but here goes.

Car is a 2007 Renault Laguna 2.0 16V Dynamique. Damage is as follows:

Dented and scratched NSF wing
Dented NSF door
Scratches along full length of NSF door
Dent in sill NSF
Dented NSR door between the two doors
Scratches along whole NSR door and sill
Dents in sill NSR - at the same bit as the door and at the wheel arch
Scratches rear wing

It'll be going to an insurance bodyshop and there will no doubt be courtesy car costs in there too...

I'd imagine at an insurance body shop it won't be far off write off value.

Thanks - sounds weird but I'm kinda praying for a total loss - I can buy it back for pennies anyway, right?

No, not pennies. Whole lot can be done for around £1000-£1500 tops depending on how bad the dents are. Some may be able to be pulled out. The whole side would need repainting no matter what. Sills are cheap, even from the dealers. The repair costs will be less than 50% of the market value of the car so its unlikely it'll be written off.

Do they assess it based on the retail value or the trade value?

What's the normal cost of buying the salvage back if it were a total loss? It's pefectly driveable, just looks a mess.

While it may be perfectly driveable it is possible there is some chassis damage which makes this not such a good idea. It's often the damage you can't see that spells the end.

Had it on a ramp at a tyre place the other day to re-attach the exhaust heat shield, no visible chassis damage.

Plus I assume the insurer's assessor would prepare a full report prior to writing it off, right?
