Help. I have just burnt my new carpet.

Options
Have just spilt hot ashes on my new sitting room carpet. Can I expect the insurance to just patch the carpet or will they replace the whole carpet. It is only months old although we have new for old cover.I expect them to fob me of but should I insist on a replacement. The burns are not THAT big but it has spoilt the carpet that we hoped would last for years.I have not contacted the insurers(Norwich Union) yet as I was hoping for some advice first as I've never had a claim .
I would be grateful for any advice.

I'm asssuming the carpet was expensive. If less than say £150 or £200 , with your excess and then possible increased charges (especially if you get no claims discount) you would be better off not claiming.

They should replace it but i expect they will try and take the cheapest course of action for them!

It was a fairly expensive carpet and I'm worried that if they try patching it up it will not last as long. Also the burns are right in the middle so will be in a heavy wear area so even if they increased my insurance I'd still be better of if they replaced it.Can I insist?

They are most likely to replace it.I used to work in carpet retailing and they very rarely patch it. What they will prob do is send you a list of your nearest approved carpet retailers and tell you to go there for a quote, sometimes they do this themselves. Usually it is Allied carpets who will send in an estimate and you get to choose a replacement to the value that THEY say.If you have an original reciept for the carpet it will speed things up a bit.You also will pay your excess to the carpet company. You are probably talking about a month for the whole process if it is not a stocked carpet, which yours will probably be if it is good quality.

Thanks for the reply. As i got the hall ,stair and landing done with the same carpet I would hope it will be the same carpet. The receipt is for the whole lot but assume they can judge how much it will cost to replace the sitting room carpet.
I think the carpet came from Belguim so it took about 6 weeks to arrive and it was bought from and laid by a local firm. I live in the sticks so no big carpet firms here.

    Fingers crossed.

You do not have to have the replacement from the company specified by your insurer. You should get the carpet man you used previously to quote you for replacing and send this to the insurer. They will probably contact him direct and ask for a discount.
