As it happened, the weekly email came to my desk on the very same day that my Norton ran out :jso saving me £40 or so is always gonna make me happy!

I have downloaded microsoft security essentials, is there anything else I need to download as well in terms of keeping safe online?

Please dont be too technical, I am blonde!!

Thanks :-)

A firewall unless you're using windows inbuilt one and a spyware scanner like SAS or MBAM. Also you should download the Norton uninstaller to make sure all of its component are gone.

-check your windows firewall is turned ON
-check windows is automatically set to download critical security updates
-other than that MSE will be perfectly sufficient

Also worth practicing good behaviours around not opening dodgy email attachments, not going to websites you get spam emails about and not clicking to install things that pop up from the internet -> all that 'click here to scan your computer for errors'.... 'install this codec to watch free !!!!!!'' ....'click here to get the super fun joke toolbar' kind of stuff, you can get other anti spyware stuff and 'suite' software to help you out there if you really can't help yourself on that front but with basic common sense you're fine with what you have.

I use online armour free as opposed to the windows one. Just a personal preference.

    My personal secuirty is:

    Always on:

    Comodo firewall with Defense+
    Avast Antivirus
OIbit Security 360 (though most here wont like it)
    Winpatrol

    On Demand:

    Superantispyware
    Malwarebytes antimalware
    Eset online scanner
    Hitman Pro

    Browser:

Firefox with with the paranoid kit https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/collections/theparadox/paranoia/ plus Ghostery
Tor Browser with above paranoid kit and Ghostery
Comodo Dragon Browser for 32bit windows http://www.comodo.com/home/browsers-toolbars/browser.php

Best security I use is common sense.

Have you used the Norton Removal Tool to remove all traces of the program?
  • I would recommend Donnie's actions of using the norton remover and also malwarebytes: Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46 - FileHippo.com
Just remember to go to UPDATE, CHECK FOR UPDATES before running scans every so often.
