It's a side effect of the way we reindex posts in order to provide you with fast and (reasonably) current search results throughout the day. The posts you mentioned (4am) will appear in the search, they will just take a bit longer.

    Ian,

I don't think you get the size and scope of the problem. The search is now IGNORING 3 WHOLE DAYS of posts. It is not just posts between 4am and 5am. ALL posts after 4am on Sunday are missing except for any posts after 5am today. Take a very close look at the screenshot in post #5. There should be about 25 PAGES of results between the two highlighted threads.

I might be way off the mark, but I suspect Sphinx rebuilds the search database (B-tree?) in a batch process between 4am and 5am, and any posts after 5am are "added in" into a temporary file until the next rebuild. The 'temporary' file is then cleared. What is happening is that the rebuild process is failing to pick up anything since 03/10, but the temporary file is still being cleared. Last night we lost the ability to search posts between 5am on 05/10 and 4am on 06/10. The "Black Hole" is thus growing every night.

Thank you for your further feedback. Nothing is being ignored :). There are quite possibly multiple issues at play here. Investigations have continued and are continuing. Unfortunately this is the busiest time of the week so we must balance the benefits of invasive tests we would like to run against the possibility that they might bring down the service completely for everyone at an extremely inconvenient time.

Rest assured the search system is getting a thorough going over but it will take a little while and results may be a little sluggish to appear. We appreciate your patience. Thanks again.

    Regards,
    Ian

I really think you need to put things in perspective - the govt are making massive spending cuts, people are losing their jobs, and there is a little thing called a war going on - these are matters of extreme urgency, not some silly competitions!

The comps forum at this present time is becoming unworkable with a vast amount of duplicated comps resulting in MSE'rs being disqualified

if this problem isn't fixed soon the "Competitions Time" forum will disintegrate

this is now a matter of extreme URGENCY :(

    Post script
many thanks for the hard work that the MSE techies are doing behind the scenes it is most appreciated, hope that the problem can be resolved soon!

Thanks Ian - Just checked again and the problem appears to be suddenly fixed. Search is now finding things from the previous 3 days and I can't see any problems. Thanks to you and the team for doing whatever it was that fixed it. Fingers are crossed that it survives through the night.
