Search is still not working. PLEASE PLEASE get it fixed.
If you want to see the size of the Black Hole, go onto the comps board and select New Topic View. Use "win" as a search term (over 95% of threads contain this word). There are no threads between 0358 on 03/10 until 0442 this morning.
3 whole days missing.
Growing by a day every night.

The comps forum at this present time is becoming unworkable with a vast amount of duplicated comps resulting in MSE'rs being disqualified
if this problem isn't fixed soon the "Competitions Time" forum will disintegrate
this is now a matter of extreme URGENCY
Post script
many thanks for the hard work that the MSE techies are doing behind the scenes it is most appreciated, hope that the problem can be resolved soon!0 -
At 5.30am this morning the search was picking up on threads created on the 3rd & 4th. Unfortunately that is no longer the case.
I would like to reiterate the comments above. I lost count of the number of merge requests I sent to board guides yesterday and the comps board will become unmanageable if the problem is not resolved soon.
Thanks to all of the MSE team and the board guides for their hard work, hopefully this is just a temporary glitch.0 -
It's a side effect of the way we reindex posts in order to provide you with fast and (reasonably) current search results throughout the day. The posts you mentioned (4am) will appear in the search, they will just take a bit longer.

The forum search is picking up this morning's and very recent posts for me.
That doesn't seem to be the issue.
It is the large period of time between 3/10 and early this morning that is the problem I think?
The forum search seems to have failed to index or display the posts made over that period.
Taking the example search proposed by One-eye, I currently get this when sorted by last posting time on the threads.
As you can see, a period of 3 days now is absent?Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

yesterday's post's where searchable to some extent but have been lost again today
maybe new post's made today will be lost again tomorrow
So the "window" of missing posts in the search index is moving? Or rather extending?
The recent posts showing up in the search for a few hours, but then disappearing from the search results?Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

We use Sphinx search to provide you with fast search results. In order to do so we need to allow it to build an index of our posts every day. We do this at 4am. Posts made while the re-index is taking place are delayed in appearing in search results. The issue is that as the site has grown more popular, and bigger, the re-index takes longer creating a bigger temporary gap.
We have just made a change which will eliminate this temporary gap for you. Unfortunately, as with many things in computing, there is a trade off. The trade off in this case is that search results will not be current between 4am and 5am. You will get 4am's search results until 5am. But search results at 5am and throughout the rest of the day will be complete. I hope this is preferable.
Again I apologise for the inconvenience. As a large vBulletin site we are reliant on Sphinx to provide you search and that means sometimes we need to give Sphinx breathing space to catch up with the millions of posts here on MSE.
Thanks for your understanding.

Ian. I think you are missing the point.
There is more than just a temporary gap.
The gap currently sits at 3 days.
If reports are to be believed, it increased to that today from 2 days yesterday. If yesterdays posts were indeed searchable for some time.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Yes it would appear so
not quite sure how long it takes for the "Competitions Time" forum to be re-indexed but it may take a considerable amount of time for the forum to catch up in real time0 -
Searching my recent posts results in a gap between 9:31 am this morning, and 4:57pm on 02/10/2010.
I'm sure I posted in that period, so they have gone AWOL. I'm also pretty sure that yesterday I was having recent posts from then show up that don't now, so they have gone from the index since.
Others are reporting the same.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
